Now, I know this won't be to everyone's taste, but I wanted to increase the range on my GS (please don't ask why, I just did) but have always been put off by the cost. I didn't want to chop my '05 GS in for a GSA as I've had it since new and rather like it. A couple of weeks back the opportunity arose to pick up a second hand conversion kit, which at 450 quid was too good to pass up, I also got Ohlins front / back and a full Akropovic system for a further 1,000 all second hand but only a few months old.

Having done lots of digging to find photos and specs for the tank kit, I found it hard to find anything. So, for those who are interested, here's a few pics.

When I get a chance for a good run I'll put a review up.

i quite like that look.. makes it look a bit more rugged....but how many filler caps! must be a right pita when filling up!

make any diff handling wise when full?

The previous owner said it did, a little. Obviously, going from a standard GS tank to 36L will change things a bit, but the beauty, for me anyway, of this system is that you only need fill the side tanks on long trips and their weight empty being so little, there's no difference at all when just using the regular tank. One extra advantage is they offer some weather protection in the rain and of course, if cleaned thoroughly they can carry booze.

"if cleaned thoroughly they can carry booze."

lol a 3 gallons of booze... handy haha.
All you need to do now is convert it to run on ethanol and your away :D

Easy to fit?

Very interested in doing the same myself for long runs.

How easy or not was the tank expansion kit to fit? I have read about them and if I remember correctly, they quote 20 minutes to fit / remove?

Does it involve any drilling of existing fairing / frame?

Do the extra tanks rub on the BMW tank / fairing?

I have to be honest and admit I didn't fit them myself. They were put on by the guy who originally fitted them for the bloke I bought them from. Apparently, the most important thing to do is to lay all the parts out in installation sequence, and not to rush.

You can get the install PDF here: http://www.touratech.com/shops/001/...=1159&osCsid=315b824cec2621287c49b7c5a8ccd1b7

Click on the "Bedienungsanleitung: Download" link.

To fit from scratch would take 2-3 hours, depending on your knowledge. I don't know how long it'd take to remove them when not needed, but I'd say you are about right with 20mins or so. I doubt I'll bother doing this though.

The only mod to the bike itself, is a small hole in the original tank, for the fuel feeder pipe, the kit comes with a template for this and a plug for when the tanks are removed. The existing frame / fairing stays the same.

I've not noticed any rubbing on the tank or fairing, I think there's a sufficient enough gap to stop this happening.
