3-4 definite reported Servo ABS failures in this month's BMW Club journal..........

All different bikes - K1200RS/R1150RS/R1150R/R1150RT

Can they all be wrong and some were multiple failures???

What do you mean by 3-4 Servo failures? Could you - please - post an accurate summary of the BMW Club journal?

Why not join the club? Or will that bite into the companies profits? Or is it detuctable against tax as investigating other peoples designs?

I do not know the club. Sorry, I do not understand the rest of your sentence.

I just want to know what they are writing in detail. That's all.

I said on 8/11/04: "Don't push it. Don't push it or I'll give you a war you won't believe. Let it go. Let it go."

I said today: "And I did what I had to do to win! ... They drew first blood, not me."

The war is over. Some people are out of work – medium term. Period.

Dude, test your bike with residual brake function at 100mph or above – otherwise you might be killed by surprise. Do me the favor.

So let me get this right... Your asking people to do over 100mph and turn the ignition off on public roads... (and no I dont believe everyone has their own private test track)

:stupid

However I would be interested in seeing what the test is like on a 1150.

Not taking sides in this protracted debate or anything. But you don't have to turn off the ignition to test residual braking. Simply disconnect one of the brake lever switches before you turn on the ignition and start the bike.

I've done this (not from 100 mph though!), so I know what residual braking feels like. That's a topic for another thread though.

Yes.

Apparently there are numerous ways in which the servo function can fail completely. Some of the reasons those who have suffered a brake failure reported are:

1. A loose electrical connection
2. A failed hydraulic pump
3. A computer fault
4. A damaged wheel speed sensor
5. A damaged relais

YOUR purpose should be to determine what one might expect after a total brake failure, when neither the servos nor ABS are functioning. (I call this training with residual brake function). The braking with servo/ABS system off roughly doubles the stopping distance! Don't forget about the impact of the surprise in case of brake failure. It's also a fact that the residual braking force depend on the amount of lever travel you are left with on the bike. It's ridiculous, in case of brake failure you dont adjust the lever to the widest position, do you?

But you can cut most of the surprise if you do training with residual brake function (Engine off = no servos and no ABS).

That's one thing you can do for safety reasons. It's a suggestion to do training. It's really worth to give it a try! It might safe your life!

Extract from one of the above :-

I discussed with some MO-Magazine journalist the whole issue on the phone. Well, he told me that BMW definitely knows about the problems with the brakes. But there are contracts with FTE Automotive, you know. That’s the reason they forced the R12GS riders to buy ABS, to fulfill the contracts. Yes, now you can order without ABS… He also stated, that BMW would like to use an other brake system immediately, but they cannot. They don’t have one. The new system (Continental Teves) is still being developed, it’s not ready to fit on the motorbikes. It’s a dilemma. They, that have been his words, know about 200.000 “time bombs” out there.

Hope you'll all be alive after your tour of the alps this year. I wonder if BMW will issue a recall?
