TOURING on a 650.

Have to agree with the above. We've done European trips on the dakar 2 up without any problems. Sure you're not going to be travelling everywhere at 90, but where's the fun in that anyway?

I take the smaller roads travel slower and see much more than blasting along a motorway or dual carraigeway.

For me the journey starts as soon as I walk out my front door to start a journey.

Had the big bikes now enjoy riding my 650 X challenge.

You can ride a bigger bike, erm, slower. Trust me, it is possible.

Am I getting a hint of apology from a couple of posts about being on bigger bikes? Don't feel guilty if it is what you can afford and that is to your preference. There is no right or wrong way, just your way. If you're happy, splendid; if not, change it.

Me, I've had many a few cracking times on a F650 single but being at 21 stone touring two up on one isn't for me.

Sometimes less is more.
Sometimes less is more because there isn't an alternative.
Sometimes less is less.

Exactly the same as me, had 2 r1200s. 1 was a brand new r1200gsa and happy and settled now with a sertao. :D

For you that is bloody good, I hope that you didn't suffer too much. Do the single cylinder vibes aggravate your wrist injuries?

:thumb2

got grip puppies [ foam tubes ]on handle bars and the XC thumps rather than vibrates, which is great for my type of injuries, so it's an idea wee bike for me..........

The O.P would do well to look at a Honda Transalp 650 or even the newer 700.
Very reliable, very smooth engine with just enough power.Quite roomy also for two people.

Admiring the pics FarmerP. I have G650 GS and the main problem I have contemplating long tours would be the screen. At 6' 2" the wind blast at 60 plus is really bad. I notice you seem to have an adjustable screen fitted. Can you comment on it ? Whose is it etc
Are you using it with the standard screen ?
Have you tried it with the bmw tall screen option ?

I think once you have arrived in an area you want to tour then G650 is a good option for easy travelling on a variety of roads. But I think if I could get a solution to the screen issues I have then the days where e.g. You need to get 300 miles to the ferry in a day would be easier.

Any comments or opinions welcome

I'm planning another trip with the guy I toured with over the Middle East and into Asia. We're talking about going down to Honda XR400s next time as we're dealing with slightly harsher terrain and need something tougher and more reliable. People do believe propaganda a little too easily. It's like ABS, anyone using that should be in a car. Ideally a car without an engine.

I just bought a new Sertao and this summer my wife and I are going to tour Spain on it. 2up and with a complete hard case luggage system.

Had a 650 Funduro for six years it dragged my fat arse + camping gear all over the country and North Cape in Norway and never missed a beat.
So you can tour on one.

I had a 1200 , now I have this. Brilliant.

It seems everyone has forgotten that years ago prior to the japanese bikes arrival, British bikes of 650 were massive or so it seemed, these bikes singles or twins dragged whole families, huge double adult side cars and sometimes trailers all over the country, I know technology has moved on and engines are now oil tight, but now it seems that under 1000 cc is looked down on for a long tour, I currently own a 1997 Suzuki 650 freewind, and have owned an F650 strada, both seem to be capable of a long tour 2 up.
