Hi ,

If this has already been discussed please point me in the right direction...

Thanks

As above really. I deal with tracking devices a fair bit at work, and yes .... they do work, but that won't stop yer bike getting nicked. The crims simply strip it in hours and chuck the tracker in a hedge or in some cases park a vehicle up for a week somewhere non attributable and see if the cops find it. (They'll do this if they're not sure whether it's got a tracker or not).

A tracker won't prevent it from being stolen, it will only allow you - possibly.... to track it after it's already been stolen, provided the tracker has not been blocked - make sure its both GPS and VHF. I would recommend a sturdy chain and ground anchor at home - Abus Granite Extreme for instance. ;)

Thanks for the info on the Abus Granite.....looks like a good piece of kit!

Would still like the chance to get it back if some twat nicks it!

Having had mine stolen a couple of weeks ago, my new one will have BikeTrac tracker, also have bought an Abloy 362 Padlock and Almax 16mm chain. - Overkill maybe, but you only want your bike stolen once to get your security heckles up!

Smartwater and Datatag also a deterrent as these can be applied to the parts as well and (in the case of Smartwater) cannot be seen with the naked eye. Obviously deterrent stickers will be placed on the bike in a prominent position.

Halfords have a web exclusive deal on at the moment for the well recommended Oxford Hardcore 1.5m Chain and lock. I've just ordered two, total £112.00 click and collect :thumb

Try these folk - a few of us on here use the pinch pin system with a protector chain (19mm if you can carry the weight) and a Torc anchor at home. They are very helpful if you want to chat through your options. Add in Datatag and BikeTrac and you'll have gone a long way to protecting your pride and joy!

Biketrac is brilliant, follow their Facebook page and see how many bikes they recover (quickly - sub hour).

You can also track your bike yourself, and base the alert on a Geofence around the bike, or movement.

Brilliant piece of kit, have it on my Ducati 899 and it gives me confidence to leave the bike outside hotels etc... I tend to leave it on Geofence rather than movement as if I leave it on movement I usually get a call when at the petrol station when I move my bike after filling it up without the ignition on, with their control centre asking if the bike is OK.

Follow this link to see what they have recovered recently (or search for them on FB).

I believe this is one of the best out there.

Take a look at the advice provided here, a few extra tips on keeping things safer. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dBaEQgGOJFQ

Another tip is to use a cheap bike cover once secured away from home, adding yet more of a task to mess with the bike as well as letting it be seen by those cruising around victims.

Vehicle theft data compiled by the government highlights most risk of theft is from your home, so getting that right is primary, lots of good cheap IP cameras on the internet that offer triggers to send email and can also allow you to have two way audio to offer an challenge, switch on lights From your mobile phone.

For the ultimate in added protection take a look at installing a cloaking system http://www.smokecloak.co.uk/products/post/smokecloak-residential-1/

The name of the game here is to make the twats go elsewhere and make things as difficult as possible to slow them down.

If you buy a tracker have you thought about how your going to get the bike back ??.Are you yourself going to get it or let/get someone else to collect it. The point I'm making here is simply this, your bike gets stolen, you decide to go and collect it. You arrive where the bike is, your in unfamiliar territory, you have no idea who is now watching you, or how many peeps are watching.................waiting for their moment to........................ you can see where this conversation is going..................

After working & installing telematics in anything that moves for over 25yrs not many people have a plan in place as to how they are going to get their vehicle back. If your relying on the local police via a call from yourself they may be busy and not be able to attend at that crucial moment in time to help, rendering the point of a tracker pointless.

If you still want a tracker buy one with vhf and a 24hr call centre which monitor the tracker, yes they cost more money to buy & run but they stand a far better chance of getting your vehicle back than you do.

Confucius say: A person who has had their bike stolen has the strength of a hundred men! ;-)

My GSA was stolen earlier in the year from central London. I have a tracker and the police were with the bike within half an hour.

I have the Autocom tracker. You manage it yourself with a PAYG sim and texts. It'll alert you if it senses vibrations - so you get a bit of warning if someone's messing with your bike.

One tip - hide it well (and maybe even have a dummy tracker on your bike). The thieves are wise to them and will search your bike at the first opportunity.
