Off to the Bike Show on Friday, got some bulky stuff to buy so not taking the bike. So, train or car?

Wot's the traffic like coming out of London going north on the 406 and M11 mid-afternoon on a Friday? Is it to be avoided at all costs?

Ta muchly :thumb2

I think ...

... you've answered your own question. I regularly travel out of London (albeit West, not North) on a Friday afternoon. If I can't leave by 2pm, I'll wait until 7pm because the arrival time will be much the same

Leave the car...... traffic will be a bloody nighmare. take the train, ease the strain......... plus you'll be able to have a few beers too...!!

Travel

Take the car, Its a duel carrageway from the Exel, and all the way to the M11 you will get slow traffic at Beckton, where it joins the A13 because of the lights, and again where it joins the M11, because of the A102m and A12 joins via the slip, to the left, from the woodford round about.
Watch out for the 2 speed cameras its 50mph.

M25 will be slow due to road works to J25 Enfield,as you join, again 50mph and slow in to Harlow, if you cut through via A414, J7, of the M11, as its a single carrageway right through till you get to Eastwick roundabout.

Best time to leave between 3 and 4 pm.

I'm with GSRider on this one, its really not that bad with a few slow bits up to the M11 and then a direct route, where in Herts are you heading for? If you get away by about 4 you should be OK and at least you can sit in the warm and enjoy the Radio.

How about half and half? Park at a tube station near the end of a line or an overland station and drive from there where you're away from the worst of the traffic (until the M25).

Thanks for the replies and advice :thumb2

Probably going to be up at sparrow fart, as Mrs BLL hasn't got the day off :blast, so will probably drive in.

Drive in, but be prepared to pay stupid money for parking. You're more likely to hit traffic going in than coming out (pre 4pm). Buy me something nice for the advice. Something Arai, XL.

Take the car...

I'd agree with taking the car, but would be starting to worry by 3pm, and would definitely want to be already driving out of the car park by that point, not just thinking about heading back to the car. When it gets bad around here, it gets very, very bad.

You're missing the worst bit, but it would regularly take me a couple of hours to get from Canary Wharf to the M25 up that way if I messed up and went during the rush, which starts early on a Friday.

One option is to park a couple of DLR stops away, at somewhere like Custom House, which will also save you the cost of parking at Excel.

The car was the defo the way to go! I arrived at Excel at about 9:30, easy run in, quicker than I expected, time enough to pick up a ticket and get a coffee and brekky before the show opened at 10:00. I did pay for parking (£10) but got parked about 50 yards from the venue entrance.

The show ain't that big, so was well finished by about 1:30, the traffic heading out was as easy out as it was coming in.

Cheers for the advice chaps! :beerjug:
