I've ordered a new laptop and, when it arrives, I'd like to install everything from my current computer. However, I've not got most of the installation discs for the programs loaded - is there a way I can just create a total copy on the new hard disc?

I have a portable HDD (60Gb) - could I copy everything to there (HDD in current laptop is 40Gb - I'm using about 30Gb), then copy it on to the new computer (80Gb HDD)?

Any help much appreciated...

Mike:)

.

You could just cross connect them with an ethernet cable, and transfer it all across either using windows or FTP software, that's what I did...I'm sure you can network them together using windows and just drag all the stuff across.
Have you got a hub/switch or a crossover cable?

Good luck.../Rob

HI Buddy hows it going?

Bit of a no no trying to copy programs, they will only work if they are "installed" so registry etc gets up dated, perhapes somebody can help with evaluation copies???

Hi Graham - I'm still living in the spare room! :D

The new laptop comes with XP and a '90 day evaluation' of Office for XP. I've got Office for XP on the current laptop, but no discs - is there a work around, do you think?

Once you've got the programs installed, XP has a very usefull feature that will gather up all your data files and program settings and allow you to transfer them all to the new PC - usually via a network cable.

If you have ethernet on both PC's, get a crossover cable and it's straightforward from there on.
