1150 GS with 61 000 miles. A constant noise appears to be coming from the gearbox area. It stops when the clutch is pulled in (freewheeling) so I suspect cogbox. Looking at past posts there seems to be several similar problems which indicate 1) knackered gearbox - which would be a problem cos its out of warranty and Im skint or 2) gearbox output bearing - which I suppose I could have a go at changing, any ideas on suspect problem.
cheers

If it`s a 'gravelly' type of noise and there on tickover and also when in motion, but vanishes when you pull the clutch lever in....GET IT CHECKED OR FIXED ASAP :rob

I had that on one of my 1100`s and within a couple of days the gearbox output bearing exploded...jamming the clutch pushrod which snapped and burned out the clutch. Bits of bearing were found throughout the gearbox and in the shaft tunnel

bugger, bugger, bugger

yep thats the noise, cheers Tarka. Looks like a strip down. As its done 61 K would it be wise to change the clutch at the same time, are there any other bits which could be checked/replaced.
Thanks again

Sorry to spoil your evening, but it may save your life..... :eek

There`s no point in changing the clutch if it`s in good order and of decent thickness....but I`m unsure of the serviceable thickness of the plates.
Have a look in the specs in a workshop manual.

However, seeing as the bike`s going to be in bits anyway, and the major part of the costs of a clutch change is the labour time involved in getting to it,it could be worth lobbing a new one in.

thanks for help, has anyone got any hints and tips for this job. for instance, looking at manual it says use heat gun to release loctite on paralever bearings. What sort of heat gun is used, a blowlamp might be a bit drastic and a magnifying glass and sunlight is no good cos its always raining in the pennines. Could ask my boss, the sun shines out of his arse.
cheers

Heat Gun = Hot Air Gun

Rather similar to.....but not to be confused with....a Domestic Hair Dryer.

For the results of confusing the two, refer to my Avatar :D :D

All back end etc off bike, little bit concerned about stripping gearbox to replace bearings, is it a piece of p--s or should it be done professionally.
cheers
