There was a bod seeking advice in the Travel section as to whether he could (or should) ride his bike to the upper French Alps ski resorts in January to go skiing (with his skis, of course).

History does not relate what happened next.

Greg, seriously, it's worth looking at as an option. I've done a similar, albeit slightly shorter journey to Austria many many times by both car and back when I was a coach driver. The convenience of having your own car when you're there is to me, invaluable.

Flying in and hiring a car is often cheaper and out here all hire cars come on winter tyres. If you fly and hire you have a wide choice of routes-compare the total cost though. Sometimes a more expensive flight take you to an airport with cheap car hire.

Cortina is a bugger to get to on the cheap...... I've flown to Bolzano but it was on a twin prop and a lot of people's skis got sent to Innsbruck separately.

General verdict is Venice Treviso and hire a car is the probably the most convenient but that gets expensive on your own.
 
Cortina Express buses run somewhat frequently from Venice Mestre train station, Venice Marco Polo airport and from Treviso airport, daily off peak season and 5 times per day in high season. Journey time from Venice to Cortina 2 hours.
There is a train to Pieve Di Cadore some 35km from Cortina that comes direct from Venice (€7.50 each way) a 6 times a day during the peak winter season and takes approximately 2h45m, and then dolomitibus runs a bus that runs roughly 5-10min after arrival that will go to go to Cortina in approx a half hour, a ticket is €3 and can be purchased upon entering. Taxis to Cortina from here are €65. Similar public transport runs in summer.

That's really handy to know..... Only skied one day in Cortina, whilst I was doing the Sella Ronda area.... Lovely resort and brilliantly groomed slopes but not much available at budget prices from UK operators, so might look into this myself :thumb

My preference is still to drive but my leasing company are playing hard-ball when I ask about winter tyres. However obesa non cantavit as they might say in Cortina!

Good call!

The Cortina Express winter timetable isn't available yet, but a few e-mails confirms that they will be running a service from Marco Polo airport to Cortina during the ski season for a €25 each-way fare. And they can carry my skis.

British Airways flights at £130 return means that this is shaping up to be a bargain ski-week!

I've upgraded to Club Class on my return flight. :ChrisKelly

Club in one direction means that I get an extra baggage allowance in both directions - so I can take my skis & boots without paying any extra. Also access to the BA lounge at Venice and gut-bucket-sized seating on the plane home.

Just waiting for Cortina Express to publish their winter timetables and I'm done.

If you get a chance, I would be interested to know how you got on, I love skiing in the Dolomites but usually end up doing it on last minute deals, quite fancy a multi centre break and a few days in Cortina would certainly be on my to do list :)
