Trip to Athens

Hi lads
I'm heading to Athens this July from roscoff and have two routes in mind, France and Italy then ferry across to Greece or France then across through the eastern blocks all the way down.
Now its a first for me and think my buddy is going to back out at the last minute I dont mind travelling alone but just not sure of the eastern block is it safe any info please

There is no such thing as the Eastern block any more.

It is perfectly safe, though it can be a bit rustic in parts (like Ireland with 'attitude') through all of the countries you intend to travel, unless you get very, very lost.
