Triumph 400

Visited Triumph Ashford last week with a view to buying with my lad. All sold, including display bikes. Suggested 2024 was the earliest availability, sells technique maybe but there were none to be viewed any more. Day before they had three.

Bulldog in Wokingham had 12 roadsters and 12 scramblers allocated to them - all sold on the recent demo weekend.

They have since taken about 14 orders for the next delivery, expected Feb.

Think it’s the A2 licence laws effect. Upgrading would take circa £850 from his budget so A2 bikes that go reasonably are his market

That's weird as the Demo bikes are only in the dealers in December with customer bikes not being available until January (Street) and April (Scrambler) :duno

Agreed. Same dealer I’ve twice taken my current bike for a px quote with a view to buying a Rallye Pro without any quote being offered despite follow up calls. I bought a Norden instead.

Not got the greatest confidence in their sales chap.

Give Premier Bikes/Triumph Oxford a call on 01235 519195 and speak to Steve Dimascio (prenounced Dimazzio)

He's the Triumph Brand Manager and is a no bullshit kind of guy :thumby:

Bulldog in Wokingham were also very straight. They are taking £100 deposits, which guarantee you a test ride in January (or whenever the bikes turn up) and a place on the waiting list for a subsequent order. If you take the test ride and don't want to proceed, the £100 is fully refundable.

Sounds fair enough and prevents people (like me) wasting their time, playing on their test bike!

What's the consensus on the power? Is 40bhp enough to provide a relaxed ride at 75mph with a bit in reserve?

My only frame of reference is my old XT350 which made just over 30 bhp. That did 60-70 all the way to le Mans, two up* with luggage in 1988, so perhaps the Triumph's 40bhp's enough? I am not chasing bhp... its not the bike for that... but for me even a lightweight bike needs to be non-frightening for odd motorway stretches.

* my mate on the back was in extreme discomfort and I am not sure he's been on a bike since. The XT is not a two-up tourer.... :D

I’m 62 fortunate enough to have enjoyed very good health and physical fitness. I can still easily handle my 2016 GS Adventure, but obviously if/when I get to 65 or 70 plus I might consider something like this. Only time will tell, obviously.
I’m 66 in a few days, and still ride my GS daily. Hopefully I won’t have to pick it up too often.

I’ve asked the bearded bloke in Robinsons Foundry to quote me twice on a V100 Mandello with my GS in part ex. Waffly excuses, and no quote. If I do buy another Guzzi, he’s going to have to try hard to convince me to not purchase elsewhere.

Perhaps it’s a Kent thing. I can’t help thinking that since Laguna took over H’s on the A2, they’ve got the county sewn up.

I think its dealers and their over reliance on the logarithm of Autotrader and finance. I am trying to buy a car just, something to have a bit of fun in on a weekend with kids. spotted one I liked ask questions and what discount and the dealer not interested, you must just have to be some mug buying on credit with all the warranty, wheel damage insurance etc. so they can screw everything out of you. It was exactly same last summer when my missus was buying a motor.

On the 400 front, just before Xmas went on factory tour and they had loads of demonstrator bikes in the shed ready for your Youtubers to ride and tell us how brilliant they are. Guy doing the tour said they are selling like hot cakes without folk even seeing them. They certainly do look a lot better quality than an Enfield (but time will tell on that front) from my look around one. You can see at 5k its a lot of trouble free riding for bezzing to the pub/cafe or whatever on a nice summers eve.

There’s Oakley who are Yamaha dealers in Maidstone, owner `Paul is a good guy but obviously Yamaha only. He sells numerous other brands in his other store, BSA, Royal Enfield, CF Moto etc.

For day to day use I visit Ryder Autos in Sittingbourne. A very good shop, though they don’t hold any franchise and are used sales only

I asked Robinsons Foundry for a px value several years ago for my R9T against a V85TT. Same response, the R9T needed ‘special tools’ apparently and didn’t interest them. Never did get a price for a V85. Shame as the shop itself is local and has a good vibe

I sat on one last week. Was quite small, a bit like the 900 street twin.
The scrambler felt good though. The dealer said they have just ordered 50 from Triumph. They have got a long waiting list!

Depends how tall you are as to which one is best for you. I'd be okay with either but as my wife will also ride whatever I replace her current CB300R with it'll have to be the Street 400 - the seat height on the Scrambler would be too much
