Truth is engine bars don't protect the GS headers

Whilst at the Overland event at the weekend a parked up GS took a dive into the soft grass. It had engine bars and panniers so no damage. Rushing over to help pick it up I noticed quite a deep gouge in the header from a previous fall. It seems you do need affix bars and head protectors.

For gauge get gouge.

Good job that the all terrain overland machine was protected against a fall onto soft grass. :augie

Nope, it needed a crushed can to protect its pride :augie

However, all is not lost....This has to be the best test from a good designer with an undeniable faith in his product

That's a great test. They are obviously very good and I'm tempted to buy but I don't like the look of them. Has a similar test been done on the metal Touratec ones do you know?

I like the look of them and I think they will look superb on the Triple Black!

I can't see the Touratech ones being as protective against the shock, the Machine Art covers have a rubber lining that acts as a shock absorber, however the Touratech version may score if it's a long slide down the tarmac, but after a long slide down the tarmac, scratched covers might be the least of your worries! :augie

They don't look great to me, but offer the best protection, so i fitted a set and have been very happy with them. Have dropped mine a few times off road and no damage to the bike.

I guess I could fit a rubber insert between the rocker cover and the metal plate fairly easily. I'm restricted on width due to getting my bike down the side of my house so unfortunately I can't fit crash bars but would get away with a small protector such as the Mc art one or the touratec one. I need someone to drop their bike with the touratec ones on!

I have BMW covers but have been told the BMW engine bars don't fit with them on. WTF. But that the new 2017 GS engine bars might.

Oh I don't know, I think they look the quite the part on your bike!

I wonder if it's worth putting some acf50 on the metal cam box lids before fitting them, save any corrosion happening unseen behind the covers.....in your case! :thumb2

Totally agree. Love the way you have blended everything in with the muck! Nice job.

I have some xhead cylinder guards too. No crash bars fitted as still not convinced in a road spill that they'd save more damage than they might cause (in a slide) .
Maybe he can do some total engine covers to stop our engine paint falling off?!!!:D

You rushed over to pick it up? Why? It wasn't going anywhere on its side and the dampness of the grass wouldn't attack its paintwork for oooooh, let's say at least 10 minutes. Walk over next time, it conserves energy and those panniers may well be full.

Some people are just nice.
