It's the time!

Saturday I'll go to order the panniers for my 12GS... I don't know if TT Zega 35+41 or BMW Original.

Original (BMW 1200GS): Good design but plastic! Don't need additional frame and this is beautiful. Cheaper than TT Zega kit (I hope in an extra discount)

TT: Stronger! But I don't like the frame without panniers. Is so terrible? Someone may post some picture of a 12GS without TT Panniers and the frames fitted??? Is easy mount and dismount the frames? How many time it needs?

how often are you going to use the panniers and for what use Theo? That will affect what advice you are given...

From your earlier post it is pretty clear to me that one of the big attractions to you for the BM panniers is the clean uncluttered look when they are not fitted.

I spent some time deciding on what panniers to go for recently and eventually chose Hepco and Beckers because I actually liked the look of the pannier frames on the bike as I found they complimented the trellis frame and in fact they are pretty much the same colour.

I preferred the rigidity offered by having a conventional frame and find it could provide addition protection in the event of an accident for the rear of the bike.

Cost wise the Hepco frames and panniers worked out about the same as going for the BM system.

If you have any hesitency about having pannier frames fitted go for the BM system.

Good luck with your decision. :thumb

Well.... I use the panniers for my long summer trip and for weekend when I stay 2 or 3 days out. Usually I've the passenger so I need the panniers for extra space. If I remove the TT frame when I don't need the panniers may be an easy solution?

I get the feeling that while you love the idea of the BMW panniers and the fact they dont use a frame, that deep down you really don't like them from a looks point of view ( Good design but plastic! ).

Nothing wrong with that, go for what you really want in panniers, if it's the all aluminium look then fitting and removing the frames when required is not going to be an issue. I can fit and remove my Hepco frames in 20 mins which is not a lot of time as far as I'm concerned.

Personally I'd advise you to look seriously at Hepco and Becker, not as expensive as TT and top quality :thumb

The H&B frame is good. Small and nice without panniers. http://www.hepco-becker.de/anbauanleitungen/650637.0009.pdf

I like H&B alu Exclusiv... But too much expensive! With the Alu Standard the passenger have problem? I've read then the panniers are fixed in a not great position. I think that there is not a big price differenze between TT 35+41+frame and H&B Alu standard 40+30+frame.

The price differente between TT 35+41+frame and the original 12GS panniers will made the difference for my decision.

Tunder: With your Alu standard fitted what the max width???

Would have to measure them tomorrow to get the width, but as a guide it is less than the width of the bars.

I went with the 38 / 43 litre combination to allow for the exhaust, but many people use two 43 litre panniers.

Perfect!!! This is the Picture I was looking for!!!! Thank you!!!! :thumb

The frame is big.... And the link under the identity plate terrible.... But TT is TT so I think that the design may be secondary. First of all I need to use the panniers... not to look the design!....

Nothing wrong with the plastic BMW panniers. They are strong enough in my experience (couple of low speed tumbles with them on) and waterproof. You can put them on the bike in about 30 seconds, and have the locks matched to your ignition key, which is convenient.

The downsides are that the left pannier doesn't have much room unless you expand it, and because they are not top loading you really need to take them off the bike to pack them.

Metal Mule

Before you choose your panniers check out www.metalmule.com
I have been using there boxes for nearly 3 years now on my both my Gs and G/S :D
Decided to go their route for my 1200, particularly when they introduced the set up with a Scorpion can to bring in the nearside pannier very close to the seat. Makes a superb set up, I have 2 38litre boxes with the 22 litre top box.
They are wonderfully secure boxes (falling off on muddy tracks does not move them and they save the bike!!) Easy to release and in my opinion when the boxes are off the frames are unobtrusive.
Plus of course the frames are available in grey to match the frame or black if you prefer.
Really do recommend you look at them.

Have a look here They're good reasonably priced panniers and the rails can be removed in minutes when you're not using them.
I'd not long bought a set when I swopped my 1150 for a 1200 so I sold the OE panniers and just got a set of mounting rails for the 12.

Oh and Paul (Caveman) gives a cracking service. I am not affiliated in any way just a satisfied customer.

OK I think that I'll buy:

TT Zega 35+41 with Silver frame. :thumb

With the original panniers fitted in max size position, how many width result GS?? (960cm TT)

Is easy to fit the TT frame? I want to mount it myself. And about the mounting kit to fix to the panniers???
