Tuning

I'm new to the GS having owned mine for less than 500 miles. It's a 1999 model that has covered 20,000 Km so I guess it should be run in. It feels to me as though the carbs, if it had them, are out of balance. It doesn't like constant throttle - hesitates and surges, and feels generally 'lumpy'. Any suggestions as to what I should say to my dealer (SPC at Alton)? It is going there on Wednesday this week. I have read a fair bit about the importance of setting TPC and other details to do with the balance of the FI system. I'm trying to avoid being 'fobbed off' by the dealer. TIA Richard

SURGING

I must be one of the lucky ones, as I do not seem to have this problem.

I do know a few of you suffer or have suffered with surging, and I would love to know how you resolved the problem. It seems to be a common problem, and therefore many people would benefit by letting us know how you resolved it.

The dreaded surging. I tried removing the yellow plug under the seat that was supposed to affect the mixture, to no avail. Unfortunately the only way I cured mine was to get a sebring y piece and silencer, to eliminate the cat.
Best of luck with yours, Richard.

Also have surging on my 1150GS, worse when air temperature is cold, but problem only starts when 2bars come up on the RID. (No problem from start). Dealer and BMWUK appear uninterested in problem, or is it that they don't know how to solve it? Where do I buy a Sebring Y piece?
Pete

Sebring exhausts - try Bracken, SW London. Speak to John Hill, and mention the club.
You might as well have the silencer as well - nice and fruity noise, not too loud.

I have tried different sparkplugs, after advice from GSClub members. Big improvement but not perfect.
Champion RC8PYPB4 (As fitted to latest Rover 75 45 25 Part No. UGSP66527) I can't read German, which plugs are recommended by Wunderlich?
Pete

Forgot to mention that teh sebring exhaust pops and bangs a bit - and occasionally gives a shotgun like backfire....
Some may not like it - personally I do, but it may not be to everyone's taste.

Now fitted sebring Y piece (kept original silencer). What a difference, the bike is now as it should be!! Hesitation and surging virtually disappeared and much safer to use... but why does this problem seem quite common..and why aren't BMW sorting it out?
Pete

Anybody know why the Y-piece makes a difference to the surging (this applies to R1100 as well as R1150 - right ?) ? I am asuming it is something to do with the sensor rather than any affects of the gas flow change. Also, anybody try the zero=zero method to solve this problem ?

I beleive the surging problems originate with the bike trying to beat the omissions laws, and by changing the computer mapping to meet the new regulations i beleive this is the start of the surging problems. By removing the cat converter and fitting the y piece you then free up the exhaust.

i could be talking rubbish, and its only my opinion ??? Over to you :)

First of all, don't suppose that at 20,000 K the engine is fully run in. It may be, but mine took about 20,000 Miles, you can tell when this has happened, you burn less oil and engine breaking is not quite as effective. When it is run in it is a good idea to use fully synthetic oil, however, do this yourself as the dealer will charge you a mint to do this as they mark up their bulk oil no end. Plus, you will know what is in the sump, keep the receipt if you need to prove to buyers when (or if) you sell the bike on.

Onto the hunting problem, I had a similar problem and removed the engine management system (EMS) fuse to clear the memory. This did not work as the EMS has a residual current to retain settings. The best advice I had was to give the bike a bloody good, fast run. I do mainly town work, so I took the oppotunity to go for a blast and it did the trick.

Starting to lose the tune again but it has been 12,000 miles since my last dealer service so the EMS needs to be checked and reset by a dealer soon anyway.

Good luck.
