I'm planning a summer route coming north in the French Alps and looking to get towards Andermatt.

It looks as though I have 3 options:

  • Mont Blanc tunnel
  • Grand St Bernard tunnel
  • St Bernard pass

I know the last option should be the way to go, but not having done either of the tunnels would I be missing anything?

Mont B €23.20,
Grand St Bernard tunnel €19.40

Take the road! :thumb

I put some routes down to Andermatt area, check posts, I never use tolls! only Glock when it's free with Grey One!

Well, you're not going to see much to your left and right in a tunnel. I hope that narrows it down.

The tunnel is worth doing if it is lashing with rain, or flecking with snow and dark as it was when I last went.... or just to have a ride through, following the blue light, your unlikely to pass thro' a bigger one every day.

You will have ridden lost of passes to get there / come back (depending on which way you are coming / going) so missing out one ain't going to spoil your day....

Yes, The Point - Entirely!

The GSB Pass is fantastic, the tunnel bypasses all of the Italian side and most of the French side.

From the French side coming in from Martigny the road starts quite fast (By Alpine standards) and sweeping with a pretty decent surface, you then enter a long snow shed for a couple of k's before a turn off lets you escape up the pass instead of going through the tunnel.

From here the road tightens and narrows and is a fairly knarly climb up a barren rocky mountainside, not too tight though and none of the stacked hairpins that can ruin a ride.

At the top is a few shops and cafe's and a great view back down the mountain.

Over the border the Italian side is fantastic, it was being resurfaced in parts when I rod eover it last year and the year before so they may well have finished by now.

The road back down (or up if your coming the other way) is predominantly wide and grippy (new tarmac) with a constant string of tight (but not too tight) bends all the way back down.

A very underated pass IMO, I have only ever ridden it in this direction and would love to go again some time and run over it in the other direction.

As stated unless the weather is awful then take the pass :thumb2

The tunnels are ............. well ........ concrete tunnels ie. boring and expensive.
Take the pass :thumb

Is the St Bernard Pass the road the Top Gear oafs had a crisis over? Twisty, Tarmac type affair?

The "top gear" road was Davos to Stelvio.

Strange bit was that the filming was all to cock. One moment they're going down the Stelvio then seconds later up! Nice roads though..

Roger.

if going on the pass watch out for all the brain dead morons that wander around at the top and ignore all the cars and bikes rapidly approaching them. a good blast of a stebel gets them running !:thumb
