Turn the key and the dash doesn't come on, after a few tries it then works. And after an hour or 2 riding the bike when stopped it works great until you try it the next morning.

What could be wrong i will disconnect battery tomorrow to see if that makes a difference what would you suggest?.

Disconnected the battery and put it all back together and no difference, will need to get the optimax of my uncle :)

I had similar problem a few weeks back!

There was no power when i turned the key. I tried a few times and finally it came on. I was nervous because i was on a day ride with a bunch of others. When ever we stopped i kept the bike running.

Anyways I lubricated the key ignition switch when i got home and it seemed to fix the problem. No problems since.

IIRC wasn't there a problem with the connector on the rear of the ignition barrel coming away, so key and barrel are in place but the bit they turn has dropped down and isn't being turned by the key.

Worth a look, I'm off to check mine now!:augie

A mate of mine had same problem dealers told him to squirt wd40 inside the lock barrel .

Well that did the job thanks boys.

This is the kind of things i will miss when the GS gets traded in on the 21st of this month for a Varadero. Great site with people who know what they are talking about:beerjug: well mostly;)

I had a problem similar to this on my '08 GS. I turned the key and the dash was dead. I eventually tried pushing the starter and the engine started as usual, but with dash & lights still dead. A couple of seconds later, the alarm gave a loud beep and everything sprang into life. It has not happened since. I put it down to being computer driven. It probably has a Bill Gates creation in there somewhere screwing it all up..:mmmm

My 04 1200 does the same, in the morning when turning the key to the on position, nothing happens, display and everything is dead, nothing. Turn to off, and on again and the dash and everything works, start bike and off I go.

During the day it does not happen again, turn to on, and everything works. Comes tomorrow morning same story, but it is getting worst now, I have to turn the key to on and off, 4 times in the morning before it lights up the dash and everything works.

I did squirt Q20 into the barrel, that did not help, the only alternative is to remove the ignition switch and get some grease in their, and hope it will work.
