Does anyone know what the twin cam valve head covers are made of, alloy, or magnesium like the 1150? Makes a difference as I want to have mine powder coated and the firm I use will not touch magnesium, for some reason.

I had my 2007 GSA covers powder coated white and they was no prob's
if your on about the oem gsa ones they are aluminium
if your on about the oem gsa ones they are aluminium
So is that Ally on the GSA and Magnesium on the R12GS?
1200gs does not come with head protectors as std, the gsa does and they are aluminium

I thought so. Only a family member had someone repair a cover during a long Euro trip - the repairer was convinced it was alloy and not magnesium. That is until he tried to weld the cover

Rather than go on hear-say and speculation, why not pick up the phone and ask someone in the service department of your friendly local BMW dealer?

By 'cover' I meant the bit that keeps the oil in, not a protector, on the 1150 I believe it says 'magnesium' somewhere on the cover, it does not on the 1200, but that does not mean it is not made of the same material.
I wonder whether it is telling that lots of market blurb on the 2010 bikes stated "magnesium-colored" engine covers?
It could well, be magnesium and coloured, or it could be magnesium coloured. I'd be interested to know too - as I have stated above repairing one takes different methods for magnesium.
