I have a May '03 1150GS (11k miles) and I'm thinking of fitting a Remus pipe, but I heard somewhere (can't remember where of course) that they run hot enough to melt the pannier - does anybody have any experience of this?

Bramble,
welcome aboard. The problems with overheating panniers are dependent on where the exhaust points, not what type it is. My standard can (with Y piece) torched the contents of my aluminium pannier, as the cut out for the exhaust didn't allow the exhaust gases to escape without hitting the pannier first.

It's important to remember that we are not talking about radiant heat, but about where the 'jet efflux' goes. With variations in build tolerances, different Y pieces etc, the pipe can point in a variety of directions.
In my case I solved it by having a functional (= ugly :D) extension welded to the end of the can to ensure the exhaust exited aft of the rear number plate (doesn't matter to me as the panniers are, at least for now, permanently fitted).

I've seen pictures of people with holes burnt through their system cases. I'd suggest that if you have any doubts, yoiu take the bike for a good thrash with the new can and panniers fitted and then feel the pannier just aft of where the exhaust gases exit immediately after you stop...

Been thinking of going down the Y-piece/standard can route but have had the concern Bramble has raised.
I have system cases and don't want to destroy them.
I was thinking that heat reflective tape strategically stuck to the cases might overcome the problem, but as Mike has indicated that his aluminium panniers got torched, it doesn't sound like heat reflective tape would work?
I've also heard tales of LH rear indicator backs melting and number plates. Again, I thought heat reflective tape on these might help but it doesn't seem likely.
Any suggestions other than Mikes extension?

I have a Y-piece and standard can fitted, as yet no problems with the rear indicator, it gets oily/dirty like it did with the standard set up, I have just put some reflective tape on the pannier at the end were the heat will be connecting the most, now the only thing left is to go on a long run and keep having a sniff. (If you know what I mean):D

I have Remus pipe and Y piece and the hot gasses don't touch my system cases or the No. plate and indicator lens.

But the raidiant heat, although not much helps keep the Chinese Take away hot untill I get home:D

Extension

I think Remus bought out an add on end pipe extension to solve this problem.??
Check with Remus or retailer.

cheers

Thanks all, I'll contact Remus and see what they have to say, otherwise it's the tried and tested suck-it-and-see option.

Just a thought, BMW used to supply the 1100 RT with an insulated foil adhesive fix for the left pannier, it stuck on the outside, underneath the pannier, and it worked.

The problem only arises if you take the baffle out on the revolution end can ..............in my case at least:D :D

Ditto.

I've had a Sebring Y piece almost since they day I bought my GS over 2 yrs ago. I used the std can for 12mths then fitted a chip & Remus race can about 18mth ago. I've never had any problems with heat melting anything & I do ride it like i stole it (my other bike's a 2 stroke enduro with a throttle that's either shut or wide open...... ) On my way to Blubberhouses, I chased a car up the long hill on the A59 from Bolton Abbey, east onto the moors a week or so back. 110mph+ & still didn't catch the bu***r until I got to the top & my headlight hit the back of the car. It lit up all yellow & blue.....ooops!! Gave him a nice wave as he pulled over & turned around to go back down. I suppose they like to play as well, sometimes.....

remus cans

Remus have brought out an adapter kit for the revolution can ( basically just a bolt extension piece) but they also recommend fitting the heatshield off the RT l/h pannier.problem isn't as evident with removeable baffle fitted.
