Tyre damaged by glass will it be safe

This may sound like a stupid question but anyway...

I was just cleaning the bike and found a piece of glass firmly imbedded in my rear tyre. I teased it out half expecting it to be punctured but it seems OK, however I measued the depth of the hole and it's probably 1/4 inch which takes it at least down to the level of the rubber in the grooves (tread of the tyre) if you see what I mean. The glass was in the deeper part of the tread not the groove..

So now I am thinking - new tyre or will it be OK, is it worth the risk (tyres done 5000 miles ish).

Opinions appreciated...

It sounds as though the cut is in the tread block. Don't worry about it. The tread blocks are sacrificial as they're the part that wears away with use.

It is in the tread block and I have measured again and reckon you're right thanks for the advice.

I pulled large pieces of shrapnel out of both of my tyres last year in Italy.
As Mike says, if it's in the blocks you'll be OK.

I check my rear tyre & find a bloody big wedge of metal sticking out.
I remove it & thankfully no air escapes.

I check my front tyre & find another!

It's getting late & I decide not to push my luck & leave this in until Venice.
As it turns out no air escaped when this was removed either. :beerjug:

Puncture repair kit at the ready but not needed.

I had exactly the same thing, well, it was a stone, not glass... The block will sort of repair itself as the tyre wears down, So, no worries...
