I`m off on my hols next week to Switzerland, touring around and will probably be doing about 2000 to 2500 miles.:D

Problem is that I will need a new rear tyre in about 1500 mile. Should I buy one now in the UK before I go, or will it easy and not more expensive to buy one while on my hols?

Some might say buy now and take with me, but I dont want to lug the spare tyre around with me.

Anybody got any recent experience of buying tyres in Switzerland/Austria or Germany.

Cheers
Paul

well - dunno 'bout you - but 1500 miles = about 3mm.

change it now - but do it somewhere like National tyres - not a dealer.

Low tread = more chance of punctures.

Last thing you want to be messing about with on hols.

or take a few cans of tyreweld.

---I know what i'd do. .........

Yep I’d 2nd that, get it changed before you go as its one less thing to worry about when you’re on your trip. I’ve found it very hard to estimate tyre wear as tyres get close to the end of their life – what looks like 1500 miles could quite easily turn out to be 500 miles or even less. Get it changed now and enjoy your trip.

How much is peace of mind worth? Are you sure that you'll find a tyre supplier that has the tyre you want. Will it be cheaper to change it in the UK rather than having to pay over the odds because you're desparate for one? What happens if they sell you one from a bad batch? Can you bet you won't be changing the tyre on the only dry day of the holiday?

Me I'd do it now and have the peace of mind.

if its a tourance they are more prone to punctures when they are balding I think. I wouldn´t risk it. Especially as they are not going to be much cheaper (if at all where your are going). WOuld never risk spoiling my bikeing holiday personally.

Agreed.......even if you can get a tyre 30 quid cheaper, is the several hour (potentially) delay during your holiday worth it??

That's why I got mine changed before we got to.....ah.

I'll get me coat.

Another vote to get it changed now.
especially when you ride it with any luggage etc.
enjoy the mountain passes with newish rubber!
What happens if you get it changed abroad and they damage your wheel?
It's bad enough sorting it out in the uk never mind abroad.;)
ps have a great holiday.:)

Been there, done that, never ever going to do that again. 3mm of tread left this time last year before a 3k mile trip. I decided that I would replace it when I got back. However, nerg nail had a diiferent idea. Tyre went in Avignon. Changed at BMW dealer, 100 euro, but buggered up that day. This year, I have replaced it.

Cheers guys for you comments.

I will be calling into Micheldelver service station tomorrow. Changing to Metzerler Tourance`s. Paying £153.92 fitted to loose wheels and balanced for both front and rear. :D :D :D

Thought that sounded a good deal. A new Anakee just for the rear was £103.40 so decided on the Tourances.

Good man Mutley! Its the right decision.

BUT check the tyre for a few miles. soem of these tourance are SHIT. My current front is unbelievably bad. dont wait until its done lots of miles and you cant take it back, like me. ENjoy those terrible awful, unbelievably great swiss roads.

If you getanywhere near Zurich theres ia a really nice guy on advrider called R1150adventure who I am sure would love to show you some silly roads. look him up.
