tyre pressure sensors (TPS) and Ultraseal?

Anybody out there with TPS on their bike tried putting Ultra-seal or similar in the wheels to prevent punctures? I mean its nice of the bike to let u know your tyre is going down but id prefer to stop it happening in the 1st place! BMW say you cant put in any Ultraseal type glup but i have had it in all my bikes except one and I got a flat 3 days into ownership, Dohh!

Try it.

Let us know how you get on.

Such is the stuff of enquiry and wonder that led the Wright brothers into the air.....

For once I think BMW are correct.
The Ultraseal/etc will probably have an effect on the sensors as they are I believe electo-mechanical.
I had the same thoughts with the GT and didn't bother with the tyre pressure thingy.

If the bike system is as per the car then don't do it as they charge to clean the sensor/replace it.

Absolutely no way. It'll eventually bung up the pressure transducer, if not immediately then certainly when the tyre is changed and the gloop sets inside it.

Err - isn't Ultraseal water soluable? It was when I last changed tyres - I just washed it off the rims. And I don't ever remember it 'setting' inside the wheels.

Why anyone would want to pay to put this slime in any tyre is beyond me :augie All it does is prevent you from identifying a puncture from a nail/screw/whatever before it causes a potentially catastrophic tyre failure. What's more no tyre repairer will mend a tyre once it has had this stuff in it - and if you get a screw in a nearly new tyre this can be expensive. Now BMW say don't use it because it will clog up the technology. And yet you still debate whether to use it :nenau :blast

I would suggest if you are want to repair a puncture use one of the many m/c repair kits availble - easy to use and make an effective temporary repair until you can get the job done properly and safely. :D

:rob Where do you get your information Peter???

I know of no tyre repairer who will not make a repair to a tyre that has had Ultraseal in it. As mentioned earlier - its totally water removable (though not water soluble as it has some solids in it). Repairers simply wash it off the inside of a tyre - the tyre is not affected in any way once washed off!!! I've noticed KwickFit now charge £3 or so for this extra step (washing the tyre).

In contrast - if you use something like 'Tyre String' that glue's in the puncture hole in a tyre - then repairers that I have asked have (all) said they would not repair it - because the size of the repair (caused by the temporary repair procedure being removed) would be too large to be safe! Tyre Plugs seem to be different cause there's no glue.

Almost all the (AFAIK) North Eastern Ambulance, Paramedics, and bike Police are using Ultraseal in their tyres - because it increases safety on the road! At local BikeSafe meets (I have been too in recent years) the Cops actually allow the Ultraseal guy to set up a stand there - and some of the bike cops have been known to do puncture demo's there!

Granted - if you don't check your tyre surface daily then you might have had a puncture (though not a flat) that you didn't notice. Surely that's better than having an immediate flat??? If you find a hole with the 'tell tale' pink Ultraseal leakage - you can easily plug it with a Tyre Plug. Ultraseal will work as well on the newly fitted plug.

A side benefit of Ultraseal is that your tyres (when not punctured) will hold pressure for a significantly longer time than they would otherwise.

BMW told me not to use it with my Pressure Sensors because they could not confirm that it would not block the sensor. Others on this forum have used it effectively with no detrimental effect on the sensors. I hope more try it, because - if its works for all I'll do it my self :augie (caking myself in case I break the sensors - coward of the county:blast!!)

I'm not associated with Ultraseal in any way other than using it where I can, oh and paying through the nose for it of course .

Anyone else used it with the sensors?

Ultraseal and tyre warranties

I had an interesting conversation a couple of weeks ago at a tyre fitters as my mate was having his changed on his 1150GSA. The tyres were removed and were full of Ultraseal and the proprieter of this establishment told me that manufacturers' warranties are invalidated with its use. He quoted a court case in which a rider had tried to take a manufacturer to court for injuries received after he had a catastrophic delamination of his tyre and a subsequent crash; the investigation showed that due to his use of Ultraseal he had 12 or 13 punctures that he was unaware of:eek:. Apparently he had ridden on a road where an accident had recently occurred and as a consequence the resultant debris on the road had punctured his tyre in several places which eventually caused the tyre to delaminate. The manufacturer argued that had he not used Ultraseal then the tyre would have been removed for repair and the full nature of the damage brought to light and the tyre rightfully scrapped.

Good point - use Ultraseal - check tyres daily!!!

I have it in a nd no problems with the pressure sensors. I am now in Hungary and one guy on the tour had a punture (no ultraseal).

Could not get the punture repair kit to work so had to wait - 2hrs for truck then go to dealer and wait another hour for repair. So because of this we lost 4hrs of riding time.

Moral of the story is - if you prat about in the back garden then do not put Ultraseal in your tyres but if you go somewhere where you are likely to get a nail in the tyre then atleast try it BUT use a bit of common sense and check the tyres on a regular basis.
