Hi out there, anyone experienced the Avon Storm ST, any good comments or problems, or any any other recommendations I have a set of Metzeler on but need to change as touring next week.

Any comments welcome please, costs etc.

Cheers

It's only available on the rear - they don't do a 19" storm, so the front will have to be an AzaroST

Bike magazine did test recently in the June 2007 issue. The Azaro/Storm combination came out top but the Storm had a manufacturing defect so the mag rubbished the whole test and discounted it, so the Coninental Road Attack won. :nenau

Given that Michelin have just recalled tens of thousands of motorcycle tyres I think I'd let Avon have the benefit of the doubt - especially as their free replacement deal is unique.

I really liked the storm on the rear, loads of feedback and more grip in the wet than I have experiencedfrom any tyre. Like them so much I will be replacing my Pirelli Diablos on the the VFR with the Avons!

Just reading the Bike road test, they seem a good choice, how much did you buy a set for?

Thanks, just reading the Bike road test, they seem a good choice, and your right about the defect non - issue.

The AVON combo of Storm and Azarro appeared to be the weapons of choice. Yes, there was a defect, but it won't prevent me from choosing the AVONS as my next set of road tyres.

Michelin have had their recalls and what about the cracking and instability that have affected our beloved Tourances! Go for the AVONS! :thumb

Bit of a cliche but I liked the Avons so much I became an Avon dealer !
Will only have Storms or ST's on my Blackbirds.. and when the GS needs tyres they will go on that too :)

I am sure there are folk cheaper than me out there so do check around, but at least I can give you a benchmark price to work from.. A pair of Storms are £159.. so a Storm and an ST would be about £150(ish )

That 'ride in-ride out', fitted to loose wheels or just the tyres?

I do not fit tyres ( no facility to fo them ) but get them changed for £17.00 a pair..
And I do not mind if the wheels are loose or on the bike .. I mean, how much work is involved in whipping the wheels off :)

Just ordered the Avon combo for my 1200, despite the defect on the Bike test. Will be giving them a caning around the Black Forest in a couple of weeks time :thumb2

Any more thoughts / comments on the Avons? Looking for a set of road tyres for an Alps trip in a few weeks:D (coming from Tourances)

Just had the Azaro / Storm combo fitted today (£163 at National Tyres). Too early to give a meaningful report, but first impressions were good.

Bike seems to turn in much quicker than before and coming off rounderbouts tipping from right to left felt easier and quicker. The ride seems a bit more harsh than on tourances, but they are running at a slightly higher pressure (36/42) than I had on the Metzlers.

So far so good....

I can definately give them the big thumbs up having done almost 2000 miles in France, Germany etc 3 weeks ago. Bike tips into corners so easily, good grip in wet and fantastic in the dry, really confidence inspiring. No weave at speed even with luggage up. Only thing I would say is because I am a bit of a short arse, the profile of the tyre seems to add just a little bit to the ride height:nenau Maybe my imagination. Top tyre though, cheaper than 020s, which definately would have shown signs of squaring off by now, not so the Avons.

just do it

fitted them back in june as i new i would be doing a lot of road miles with no time to play in the dirt!
Lovely - what a difference, I think that whole exploding tyre red herring that drropped them down in the report was a shame - Give AMS tyres a ring 01803 666555, they did me a real good deal at the BMAD weekend in june, i think they do mail order.
They warm up quickly and hold heat well even on cold wet english summer days!
even if you ride like an utter biffer you notice the difference - When you first fit them I noticed how well they roll you into bends, it was a new one coming from lumpy old metzlers, after the initial shock it was nice trying to stop the bike rolling in rather than fighting with the knobbly to get it in.

:redlight turns a lower than average rider into an incredibly quick and confident lower than average rider:redlight

Bit of an update.

5800 miles later (which has included more motorway than I would have liked) the rear storm has now squared off considerably and needs changing. I've been through Switzerland to Italy where they were very confidence inspiring even fully laden with all the camping gear. On a spirited wet ride coming back from Scotland at the weekend they were great, despite being a little over worn...

Front still has plenty of life left, probably just about half worn. New Storm will be going on the rear soon. Pity the price has gone up about £15 since last August.

Happy to recommend these tyres to any fellow GSers who like to press on and / or won't be venturing off road,:thumb2
