Tyres for X Challenge

I haven't bothered with rimlocks

I just use MT21's @ 25psi and find it fine - winter or summer

Plenty good enough for Thetford sand, Peak District gritstone and mud, Yorkshire limestone and Yorkshire Wolds grass

However i'm good at finding/searching for grip...............comes with practice being a Yorkshireman:augie

thanks for all the replies.

Is it easy to change the tyres (is it a tyre lever job like in the old days) or is it a tyre shop / dealer issue.

thanks

karl

The latest tyre I bought was the Trelleborg Swedish army somthing or other. In the dirt it must be the best tyre I have had on the Dakar. YMMV

To learn the basics of tyre changing, do a google and search youtube.

Ok

getting some AC10 and will fit myself.

What size rimlocks should I get?

karl

OK, on your rim is a stamping giving the rim width, for example, 1.60x21 or 2.15x18. Please check what yours are, then go to racespec site or similar and make a puchase.
Make sure your rim tape goes over the rimlock when fitted.
Get yourself two or three tyre levers whilst there. Forget about the tyre fitters as on the trail they ain't going to be there for you so get used to dealing with stripping and mounting tyres yourself.

Be very carweful once your bike is on the AC10, there road/tarmac performance is terrible and worse than that when it's wet!

Timpo.

Sorry Karl - few IT challenges last night. The AC10 will be ideal if your planning going off the main tracks on the plain.I ride it pretty regually and find the AC10 a good all rounder. The tyre is also non directional so you can swap it round to get a bit more use out of it.I rode the summer on the twinduros from conti and found them superb. They are a good compromise for better weather off roading and road riding.I think your riding on the 28th ? Catch up then.

I've got a pair of Sahara 3's which are pretty much brand new sitting in the garage and new MT21's which are fitted to the bike. When I had the MT21's fitted the guy balanced the wheels, fitting the weights. I asked if I wanted to swap between the Saharas and the MT21's would it be ok and he said I would need the wheels rebalanced. I'm sure that you lot who are constantly changing your tyres between AC10's, MT21's and Sahara's or other road based tyres don't worry about balancing, OR do you? :nenau
Does it make that much of a difference to a bike that vibrates so much that all me fillings have fallen out? :D

Well the XChallenge is actually really smooth for a big single...much more so than the TC 610 husky i also have!

I wouldn't really bother with the balancing, any uneven tyre wear will be pretty negligible consider the relatively short life of the tyre anyhow.

On the rough stuff i doub't you notice it anyway.

I guess the thing to do is fit the tyres and see how they go. If they are terrible then it shouldn't be to difficult to get them balanced afterwards..

I know it depends what you are comparing it to, I also have a big tourer, so for a nooobie like me it is a bit of a culture shock, good point you made about the wear on the tyres, I'll give it a whirl and see how it goes.
