Just about to refit the final drive to a gs1100, I'am certain when I pulled it apart that the g/box uj and the final drive uj where set at 90 degrees apart 'if you follow me I thought both uj's would be set in line,[-------------] or have I got the phasing wrong.

yep you are right they have to be at 0 degrees

You'll find it's impossible to achieve exactely 0 degrees but there'll always be a lsight misalignment. This slight misalignment is set on purpose so when the shaft is under load the joints are actually aligned

Thx for your reply, and your diagram..... my alignment is close to yours' all but g-box yoke is different and according to the bmw manual they state.. The u-j for the universal shaft and rear wheel drive must be installed in the same posistion. So it appears the phasing of the joints is not as I thought it would be ???? must be the bmw way.

Thx for that Pomm, I'am getting even more confused now....following that link and others on the site it appears bmw dont bother phasing the u-j's as the norm..... unless I'am reading it wrong. checked mine again with the bmw diagram and thats how it came out.

there's a physical reason why they have to be at 0 degree: it's to achieve a nearly-uniform angular velocity of the shaft. Believe me, the inventor of the U-joint (Cardan) was an Italian chap called Gerolamo Cardano. Us Italians invented everything :thumb

BMW must phase them. This is a quote from page 33.17 of the workshop manual. :)

Caution:
The universal joints for universal shaft and rear
wheel drive must be installed in the same direction.

this is a tricky one with lots of info on the net. I spent quite some time searching and trying to find the right answer - it is in there!

In the begining I got it wrong and it does make a difference.

I reosrted to removing the rear shock so I could lift up and support the paralever and see in the tube. I also found that I had to i had to have the bike in gear otherwise the g/box output shaft would turn and I couldnot slide the two shafts together.

If you get it wrong, Mine was about three spline out, you will notice it, the rear end seemed 'tight'.

I must also thank my honey who helped lots

Wish I had'nt started this... but using the bmw manual statement, and the bmw manual accompanying diagram is that the true correct fitting( my manual page 33.21 ) cause you know what some diagrams are like don't ya.
Bit of a hornets nest this one . :thumb
