I know there's a few Ubuntu users on here so I thought I'd share this with you. It may well work with other Linux flavours.

I copied and modified the script which runs the 'Cosmos' backgrounds to show rolling backgrounds of my chosen photos which fade in/out. I used these photos from this years Dakar.

Create a directory and put copies of the desired photo's in there. Rename the photos something easy (1, 2, 3, 4 etc. works best).

Copy /usr/share/backgrounds/cosmos/background-1.xml to your photo directory.

Open the xml with gedit or similar and alter the file path and name to suit your photos.

The duration times are in seconds and remember to make the last transition back to the first image.

When done, right click on your desktop background and select Change Desktop Background. Click Add, change Images to All Files, navigate to your photo directory and select background-1.xml.
