UBUNTU who has tried it

IMHO........

It's just one of the many flavours of Linux. What do you want to do with it? If it's just going to be a used to browse the web and get e-mail then it's great. If you want to host a webserver etc then it's great for that too, but there's a steep initial learning curve but there's loads of help out there and once it's working it's great. At work I use the Gentoo distribution to run contact management and software fault databases as it's much cheaper than doing it on Windows.

However, if you've loads of new snazzy 'add-ons' like web cams, scanners, trick bluetooth keyboards and the like then you *could* be in for a whole new world of pain and frustration...

And personally, I think XP/OS X/Vista are streets ahead of X/KDE/GNOME in terms of a GUI.... If you want stuff to work and look great buy a Mac...

But as ever, your mileage may vary....

Thanks;

I have OSX on my Mac and Windows XP on my PC.
This is for someone else who wants to, surf, mail, type text and draw (for the kids) it is now installing as I added 128MB of RAM.

yup,

still got it on a spare box here. easy to install, piece of piss to use, loads of apps as standard, but a world of pain to install any others.

there is a little add on called Automatix that make adding progs easier, but it doesn't do everything.

for basic pc functions, it's really good, & if you're an ubergeek i'm sure you could get it to do anything. i'm not, but it's very nice & if it was cheaper than XP i'm sure it would go far :augie

i think i'll update my ubuntu machine, even though last time i did it, it wouldn't boot again & i had to do a reinstall. that must have taken nearly half an hour

Well boys, I am using it now on a Pentium 4 picked up from the local dump.

Its the bees knees as far as I can see, and the programs included are all my m8 needs. Great way to give a new lease of life to an old PC.:thumb2

Anyone got an old laptop they could give me????

Hi Guys,
Carl very kind of you, but I am in ireland so not really worth your while. Ta any way.

This program is great and comes with Open office, firefox and an email system to boot. Only really lacking MP3 but I will try and see about that.

BAsed on Linux / Unix so no problems with viruses either.

MP3 sorted with a plugin... Really very good if you have an old PC this could revive it for kids etc...

I use kubuntu on one of my PCs and SUSE linux 10.2 on one of the others. I find that SUSE is much easier to use and install. The PC with SUSE has a dual boot with Windows XP, but I find that I use the Linux more. The only reason for going into Windows is to run 2 of my favorite games.
SUSE is a free download and there are loads of support forums out there to help us new users.
