uk bike in france

I understand France has a limit of 100BHP of it's bikes. A work colleague wishes to import a UK bike into france that is over 100BHP to keep at his home.

The question is, does he need to have it restricted to 100BHP, to meet french regulations?

If it did need to be restricted, to avoid this can he keep in on a UK reg as he works in the UK, but lives full time in France. He would like to use it as much as he like's in france but still use UK insurance cover?

E-bike do 365 european cover, but in theory only for travellers and not someone commuting each week whilst the bike stays in France.

Any advice appreciated

He would probably get away with staying on a UK plate unless he was involved in an insurance claim. That would put him in very deep sh*t as for sure the insurance company would squirm out of liability.
If he imported the bike into France then it would have to be restricted though some unscrupulous people have been known to put them back to standard. Again, the insurance would check if there was a claim!

Thanks for that. That is pretty much what we thought when discussing it all earlier. He has got a 1300 Yam over in france on french plates. But his is hankering after a Ducati, which he says seem to be in short supply for the particular model he want's. Plus he does'nt want a Ducati if it has to be restricted 100BHP hence the UK bike question.

The actual figure is 107bhp as it is measured in Kw. If he lives in France he will not get away with UK plates for too long before he is stopped.
Most Ducati's are not much more than 107 bhp anyway.
I would say that the best thing is to get the bike French registered, that way he pays no road tax and needs no MOT. He will also find that bike insurance is much cheaper here.
Many French bikers change the power to the same as other European markets anyway, I know of a French registered K1200S with the full 168 bhp.

no MOT? what about the controle technique, I've only had cars when I lived in France - do you not need one on a moto?
 
I do the same with my 12GSA. Uk plates but use it in Holland to get round the restrictions. But the restrictions only last for 2 years after passing test so i'll be ok in October but will need to get it registered over here. Likely I will leave it in the UK at my girlies and just use it at the weekends and during holidays.

I have insurance and just requested extensions to my policy for Holland they accepted for 40 squid extra a month which is def worth it. Not sure they would do it for much longer than 3 :beerjug: months though?

Hi all on this circuit.... Derek Andrews in Saint-Malo here. :blast Ahhhh! the French Restrictions do cause probs for Hipower riders, but funnily enuf, BMWs dont all have the same problems. Things may change tho, since the FFMC have now brought the French government in front of the European Court:mcgun because France is the only country in Europe with such a silly power restriction:potkettle . 1300s suffer from the limit, but nowadays, a 600 makes over 100 brake, the law is well obsolete for the average Frog rider... in any case... there's very few locals who haven't derestricted their bikes in our club here near St Malo. Z1300s still make 120 brake, all these years after! Anyway, wait for rain to stop and hope to get out into garage and change the oil in the gearbox of my K12LT... the 80GS is still in 55000 pieces:augie ... must get around to putting it back together!
