I am in the process of looking for and buying my first GS and will be using it as my main form of transport. As such it will be left unattended regularly. Do these things get stolen regularly? Friends and I have had trouble in the past with Jap sports bikes 'going missing' and I was wondering if the scum bags target Beemers due to their exclusivity any more than the next bike. Also you often here of high class cars (Beemers, mercs etc) getting stolen for export, I'd be interested to here anyones experiences

i think that *generally* they're not as nickable as scooters or some of the classier rice-rockets for instance, maybe because they are bleedin' heavy or possibly because they are so ugly! but a few members here have had theirs swiped so we're not completely immune....

still - i certainly wouldn't let that put you off buying one.

As above but don't give them the chance...always lock it up when you can't see it.

Oh and welcome to the madhouse:D

Yeah... I have concern as I would not be able to get it around the back of my house as I can most other bikes (too big and heavy!) and therefore I would have to leave it in a lock up garage complex near by. I wouldn't leave my KTM or Blade there, put it that way!, but the GS seems to me as slightly more safer, as I would imagine its not the sort of thing that theives are going to get rid of easilly. I was interested if they get targetted generally though...

are you thinking of an 11xx or 1200? i reckon 11xx's probably just got slightly safer with the introduction of the 1200, which I'd imagine is a fairly attractive bit of kit for thieves...

Get a 'good' ground anchor and a 'good' chain. Its also worth getting an alarm both on the bike and if you can in the garage so that if anyone gets in theres enough noise to get them noticed.

As for thefts, you don't see or here of many on here getting nicked (thank God).

Rear wheel comes off easily.
Difficult to then push/ride away!

Had my 100GS stolen from our backyard - found it 3 day's later.

Had my 1100GS stolen from Drury Lane and found it 5 weeks later.

So yes they do nick them but they are so dog ugly once realised their error they leave them there!

Skateboard trick

Saw a police video recently about the recovery of a blade crashed in Cardiff. The front end smashed and wheel locked solid.

Basically it was exactly the same as a motorbike with a chain imobilising one wheel.

The recovery guy pulled out a skateboard and placed it under the imobilised wheel and quickly removed the bike from the scene.

The recovery guy was a team of one so imagine how fast 2 people could move a bike.

The moral of the story is lock the bike to something immovable.

With the price of spare and the quantity of scroats in our society nothing is safe from theft.

Don't give em the chance
