OK, put me out of my misery !

Just lately my ’89 R100GS has started a rather unsavoury vibratory throb (steady you lot at the back). As I accelerate there is a distinct throb that speeds up with revs, then appears to go. Going downhill (in gear) it isn’t as noticeable, ie it’s when its under load. This a.m. it seemed worse – I was even wondering if it could be engine related like big ends or the like ? My automatic reaction would be to not use it, but as we’re off (all of 11 miles) to the Farmyard Party tonight I’m gonna risk it.

The bike has about 60K on the clock so I’m concerned it could be the driveshaft ? Has anyone experienced this effect before finding something going bang ? Those who’ve had the driveshaft go, could you advice what the signs were ? What actually happens when it does fail – I assume you lose forward motion ?

I don’t think it’s the gearbox as the last time I had one of those go it was more like a cement mixer !

We’re off on our Jollies in Sept and I want to suss it well before then, in fact, before next months Kelso would be good.

First happened a couple of months ago, and disappeared just as quick as it started.
Any thoughts would be helpful at this stage !!

put the bike on the mainstand & rotate the wheel by hand in neutral.

check for graunching from the UJ or gearbox output bearing.

89 is not a paralever is it? i think they're 91 on. monolever alledged to be little trouble.

big ends would give a hard rattle when under load, prolly quiet when you shut off.
