Upgrade from 2005 to 2011 model?

Currently have a 2005 1200GS (ABS, heated bars) with ~22000 miles, but looking at an ex-demo 2011 model with Dynamic and Premium packages.

Apparently I should be able to move existing Vario cases + topbox to the 2011 model, and I would also move my additional lights (FF50 + Micro DE).

I'm tempted by the ESA etc. and am planning to arrange a test drive, but the cost to change will be in the region of £4,500. Does trhat sound reasonable?

£4,500 to change sounds more than reasonable. I think I'd bite their hand off.

As you say, you'll be able to swap your Vario luggage over. However, the lightbar for your Hellas won't fit the later bike.

Sounds like a great deal to me. £4.5k for a bike which is almost six years younger and like new. Deffo worth a test ride. I'm loving the simplicity of the ESA.

A good deal, I paid £5k to trade my early 2004 GS against a late 2008 GSA two summers ago.

Well I took a test ride on the 2011 demo and ...

Liked - the onboard computer displays, ESA (though I couldn't feel too much difference in the settings on my shortish ride), the smoother and free revving engine, slicker gearbox.

Not so keen on - low seat option (though it would be easy to change), lack of additional cockpit auxilliary power output socket (again, easy to add), slightly higher handlebars (at least it seemed to me, although they were standard).

Got back on my 2005 model, and thought - I think I'll stick with the devil I know. Time will tell if that was a sensible decision.

handlebars probably feel higher if your using a low seat IMO.
