Just thinking...would it be possible to register my existing City Navigator v7 maps to another Garmin unit, say the 276c and hence save having to purchase the maps again?

Should be able to. I did from an EU SP3 to US 2610.

It's not always the easy option to do what I did and has certain limitations. But if you're only going to be in Europe you should't have too many problems as long as you get a World Map as well. If you go for example to Morocco, although the EU CN will show it on your PC, you'll see fcuk all on the GPS 
So while you think that you could use the very basic map of Morocco to autoroute it wont If you have World Map you can see where you are, roughly. Whereas those with the EU base map will be able to do the basic autorouting 
. Which is one reason why I swapped my SP3 / 2610 for a BMW Nav 2. HTH.

thanks for the heads-up..and the BMW version has the zoom in and out buttons on the side pod..
