Uploading Maps on 2720

Having obtained a copy of NT 2008 I have installed it on Mapsource and it's a big improvement on NT9 in Eastern Europe. I then installed it on my PDA running Garmin XT and again it works, overwriting the old NT9 installation.

Now onto my 2720. Instead of overwriting NT9 it installs in the spare memory in addition to NT9. This means I only have space for about half of Europe (I have UK and Ireland up and running).

Anyone know how I can get 2008 to overwrite NT9 so I can install all of it. I don't need 9 and 2008 running together.

You can only overwrite the 2720's "normal" map storage area with new cartography using the update routine supplied by Garmin as part of the City Navigator Upgrade DVD. As this hasn't been published yet, you must be using a non-upgrade version of the cartography DVD which means you can only transfer the maps via MapSource to the supplementary mapping area on the 2720.

As an aside, you will need to clear out the supplementary mapping area prior to running the upgrade when it finally becomes available. If you don't then you are likely to get an "out of memory" condition when the updater does its work which results in your StreetPilot having similar functionality to a paperweight.

I will admit I had no idea as to what you were referring to when stating the supplementary mapping area would need clearing out. Therefore, I thought I would ask Garmin for an idiot's guide and talk me through the process. Unfortunately the individual at Garmin knew nothing about this. Would it be possible to describe what exactly is required prior to updating the mapping please?

I am guessing a bit here but I guess that when mapping is loaded into the GPS any spare memory could be used for other maps. For example, I have been running City Nav. 9 and use spare memory for the, not very useful, Topo maps.

As City Nav 10 has more data on Eastern Europe it probably needs more memory so if I have filled the "spare" space with Topo maps there won't be enough available to just overwrite 9 with 10 (2008).

The only snag I can see is that I have yet to find a way of deleting maps in the spare memory. Loading new map sets into the spare memory overwrites what is already there but although the Satnav software offers a means of enabling/disabling map sets I can't find a delete option.

Maybe it will become clear when I get an update DVD.

Andy's description is bang on: there is a limited amount of total memory in the SP2720 (2Gb) and some of that is needed for the main cartography. What memory that doesn't require - and only what is not required - is then made available for storing supplementary maps (e.g. those transferred from MapSource when the "Transfer Maps" checkbox is ticked), and any custom POI data.

Andy is also correct in that there is no "delete" facility on the device to rid it of any cartography stored in the supplementary mapping memory. The easiest way to clear it out is to select just one small map tile in MapSource and send that to the device. It won't completely empty the user memory of the device, but it will free up most of the space which will allow you to update the main cartography safely.
