USB Device Not Recognised

My big brothers' PC suddenly stopped recognising any USB devices including the brand new printer, external hard drive and flash drives.

I have done a complete format and reboot of Win XP but the problem still persists any help/advice greatly appreciated.

check the bios, in case it has a function to switch off the USB ports, my bios has this and does it occassionally.

Also check device manager to see of theres any warning triangles showing against any hardware, the ports might just be faulty.

The new XP install did include patching to SP2 didn't it? (it should be SP3 now but SP2 was the one that sorted out the USB problems)
