is USB compatabily with USB2, i.e. can a USB outlet drive a USB 2 device.

TIA Pete A

Yes

USB 1.1 and 2.0 are totally compatable; they simply run at the speed of the slowest device, whether it's the port or peripheral.

sorry but i thought it was the other way round

you could put a 1.1into a usb2 port on your p.c. but not the other way round

but as usual i stand to be corrected

and quite often am ;) ;) ;)

No you can't !!

You can run backwards compatibility only.

ie - a USB 1. printer will work on a USB 2 computer - but definitely not the other way round.

How do i know for sure - cos i spent a whole day finding out that the usb card i'd fitted to my dads pc was a usb 1.0 and the brand new canon printer was usb 2.0.

All new printers are usb 2.0 but they dont tell you on the box !
i had to buy a new usb 2.0 card - then it worked straight away.

After all day d/l every driver imaginable on a dial-up !!!!

Also confirmed by a PC tech.

hope that saves you a day or so :)

Pragmatix.....check out your pc manufacturer's web site first.....or the maker of your MOBO.......you may well find you can get the drivers to allow your USB 1's to work as 2's.........that's what i did and mine definately do work with USB 2 devices.......my brand new multifunction printerfaxscanner jobby works perfickly.

I have a load of USB 2.0 and 1.1 printers, hard disks, pen drives, keyboards etc etc and the USB 2.0 external stuff all works perfectly OK with USB 1.1 ports on XP with no extra drivers and with suitable drivers on 98SE.

I use a USB 2.0 external hard disk as a backup device on a range of PC's with 98SE and XP, some with USB 1.1 and some with USB 2.0 ports, it all works fine other than it's sloooooooow with 1.1.

To clarify this - i had installed a cheap Novatech usb 1.0 add-in card into an oldish 'puter running windows 98.

I think XP has better USB drivers generally.

98 is 'OK,but marginal' with USB.

Also if you've got 'on-board' USB, you'll stand a better chance of compatibility than a cheap chinese add-in card.
