Ok - I know nothing about Macs but everyone says thet are better. I can get hold of the following -and am wondering if it is a sensible way to dip my toe into the water. Any advice on whether this is a reasonable price and sensible introduction would be appreciated.

*********has a number of early iMac G5s that it will be replacing shortly. The machines are typically approaching 4 years old with following spec:

17" LCD
1.8GHz G5 CPU
512 MB RAM
160 GB HDD
Optical "combo" drive (CDRW, DVD read)
Wireless and bluetooth.
Full size keyboard and mouse two button mouse (no scroll wheel) possible Apple remote control.
OS X 10.5.7 (Leopard) fully patched to date.
Machines will come with their original pre-Leopard installation disks.
We only have one copy of the Leopard media.
You can obtain Leopard installation disk for cost of media (~£10) or make an immediate copy of the clean system that is installed.

All the usual Apple software although in case of iLife suite it will be the that came with the machine - the '06 edition I think.

In good clean condition, fully operational.

Why are we selling them? Because the next version of the operating system which is due for release this September will only run on the later Intel CPU machines.

£160 for the above spec.

We run three Macs in the house. That sounds like a shite deal. Please can I have the contact details so I can buy them and make sure you don't waste your money, please can I , please?

Buy one and get me another (not far away) I will send you the money!!!

Yes, shame they're not Intel, but this still seems a bargain. My lad has an old G4 still chugging away with leopard and it serves him well. I use a PowerBook, you can watch a video on YouTube, shut the lid, open it later and the video just starts playing again, quite mad really.

Wait till you start using it, I converted (dyed-in-the-wool PC bod) a couple of years ago. Now using a PC drives me barmy within about 5 seconds :blast

The build quality, ease and less worry-some use reminds me of another piece of kit... a GS :bow

sounds like a good deal, but be aware that apple has moved away from Power PC (non intel) stuff and is not bothered about making software etc. backward compatible.

Thanks for the replies guys. That would suggest that it would not be a silly way for me to dip my toe into the Mac waters.

llotse and decster - are you serious? If I can get more than one do you want me to?

Thanks for the offer Yorkie, I don't have room unfortunately otherwise I would without hesitation. You will never go back to the dark side once you get used to it and its a shallow and short learning curve. Office Mac is available at a great price from software4students.com but I prefer the last version not the latest one. Don't suppose they have any macbooks? My five year old Powerbook G4 12" is still going strong and runs all the software I need including office mac but like bikes, I just need that extra bit of speed!

Crap. And double crap. I hate the way technology devalues so quickly. I bought a G5 4 years ago, for my graphic designer to use, and it cost $6,000

Buy one, even if to use as a second machine, as that's bloody good value.

Unfortunately, I was too slow of the mark. Not surprisingly in light of the advice from you guys. I am now 7th on the waiting list in case those who have said yes fail to come up with the money - I am not holding my breath !
