What actual figure would be normal for this engine ........ on a proper compression test ? (proper = engine warm , and wide open throttle , and about 5 churns on the starter)

I am an engineer , so no waffling on about how much more important it is to look into differences between cylinders , and changes when you add oil , etc etc ....... I am aware of all that !

90 , 100 , 110 , 120 , 130 , 140 ........... what's the number ??

More later ........ long story......... related to (my post) a few posts below this !!!

700cc ...... not a 750 , 850 ......

It could be anything above 110, throttle wide open, up to 170,

110 low, 130 and above good, 170 great condition and run in,

if its smoking it's either worn out bores, valve guides or stuck piston rings!

Great ..... I got just under 150 a side
When I took sump off ....had lots of sludge and chrome filings (fillings ?) in it , so I feared worst. Looking fom below , it looks like liners fitted already ..... just need to check other simple stuff like timing etc , to find out why it goes like naff all .....

160/165 would be ideal on a good condition 850 T3, GT850, Eldo etc. and i'd expect to see the same on 700, but i can't be certain. i might have the factory figure somewhere in a manual, but unless the original compression is much less than 8.5 to 1 i'd have thought it would be in that ball park. i have seen them running OKish at 105 but that's way out of spec.

if it's on chrome bores, i'm sure it will have come off at the top. doesn't necessarily show up in a compression test and i've seen them run OK just in the ally. IME old guzzis always need barrels, pistons and guides.

i've checked out the manual and guzziology and i don't see a compression figure listed, but i can say that the V700 is 9.2 to 1, so i'd stand by my original 160/165 figure.

Best to take barrels off and have a look,

I thought they would be iron bores at that age, but chrome filings is not a good sign!

Hmm ...... sounds like work creation , as I posted earlier , can see from below that liners are fitted. I just cannot fathom why anyone with even half a brain would do that work and NOT clean out sump ..... mad !!
I am about a mile from "Guzziology" shop as I type this..... so will drop in for some bits and a natter later

Have sump back on now .... will run for for few days and dump oil and have the sump off again to check all ok

All sorted and on the road now ...... bike running much better , but never going to break world land speed records. Never found anything major wrong ..... just lots of little corrections - points , plugs , timing , carbs , etc

Cross from Victoria to Port Angeles tomorrow morning , and then head down the coast to San Francisco ........

Done that crossing Alan! Check out the pics of the old "streamliner" ferry in the 50s. Very "Dan Dare". Are you heading inland to take in any of the national parks?

Planning to (roughly !) take the coast road south .... still with lots of national parks , and come back inland. MadMaps produce a good product giving suggested routes for travelling motorcyclists. Plan to buy a season ticket for entry to all national parks .

One will Take some snaps wont one and show us what we missed :-(

Plus IS ones beloved with one?? (If not How the heck did you manage that ???)

Safe riding Alan I don;t need to tell you to enjoy yourself, Do I?? :aidan

Yes , Cathy is with me ... today was first proper day on road .... had late start due to ferry crossing , but managed 195 miles and have ended the day in Aberdeen !!

Cheers
Alan

A wee detour via Mount St Helens perhaps? Seeing as how you're on another old banger? We did the trip in reverse some ten years ago courtesy of Hertz. Motel rooms always available in all but the smallest towns and a very different pace of life and level of courtesy and friendliness compared to metropolitan USA. Have a nice day, sir!

Landed in San Francisco a few hours ago ...... apart from a broken clutch cable (bodged fix in an hour c/o a usa hardware store) , have 1000 miles + clocked up now fuss free ....... and up to over 60mpg.
Chilling for a few days here before turning inland and vaguely north .....

OK ... fast forward a bit . Last years trip was great ... about 3500 miles done - trouble free. Did an oil change when I got back - checked compression (it had gone up slightly) , and bike parked up in friends basement with attached trickle charger.

Return flights for this year now booked and we head out in a few weeks time (for just over a month) to explore some more ...

Thought at present : Advertise bike on ebay , for sale when I finish the trip - advertise on uk ebay site , for someone to have the chance to go and ride about a bit over there , before shipping it home ?? Mad idea , or is it the sort of thing might appeal to people ?
If I got the cost of the bike back + about half what I have spent on it ... I would let it go . Alternatives are : ship home and sell , or just stick it on ebay.com under my friends name ! It's worth much more here than there (I think) , but I could do without the hassle !!

thoughts ??

Stuff it ... just did it ! ..... now listed , link in ebay items ............
