Hi all,
Just started doing the valve servicing my bike, 2013 GSWC - 12000 miles, and am confused by the procedure in BMW's manual.
They say you must remove the camchain tensioner and fit a replacement special tensioner whilst setting the clearances, then refit the original tensioner again afterwards.

Given that all of this happens while the cam followers are already on the cam base circle, and the special tensioner is only going to rotate the cams a tiny bit by exerting more or less tension on the chain, I can't see the point. The followers will still be on the cam base circle.

I don't want to pay out for a special tool that makes no difference - I know I should trust the factory but on the same page they say align the cams using a special tool that grips the rectangular blocks on the end of the cams when a steel ruler held against them works equally well for no cost....

Anyone care to tell me what I'm missing please?

Thanks, Steve.

This thread on Advrider might be useful.

Question answered. Thanks.

Yes I'll stick up some pictures and a description once I'm done.

Or it's the difference of knowing it's been done or paying someone who says it's been done
