Hello all, wisdom needed. I did a search and didn't see this answered.

I have an '02 1150 GSA. I'm adjusting my valves for the first time. All seemed to be going well. Did the left side, did a full revolution of the engine and moved to the right side. So far so good. Thought I'd recheck the left side after the right side and found them to be too tight. I thought, I'll just loosen the locknuts and redo these real quick. After loosening the valve adjuster locknut, no matter how much I turn the adjuster, I cannot get any clearance between the rocker arm and the valve stem. The right side remains ok. What am I doing wrong here??

Thanks in advance.

The engine must be at TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke, not the exhaust stroke.

Now I'm confused.

I'm also a newbie to the 1150 GS and did the valve adjustments for the first time today. All seemed to go well. Did left cylinder, turned the engine and did right cylinder. Didn't re-check left cylinder. This post has now got me wondering if I have to go back in and re-check everything. Hope not.

If you did them carefully enough the first time, they may be a tiny bit out but I doubt they'll be vastly out.

A re-check is very good for peace of mind though, and if as you say that was your first time, you'll do them in half the time on the second attempt.

hope i did mine right then - i checked the LHS clearances with the arrow pointing out then just nudged the engine rounduntil the second cam arrow came around. Didnt see what stroke it was on at all. I hope i just got lucky!!!!

I always double check the clearances by giving the engine a couple or three of revolutions and re-check the clearances, then if I adjust again, I turn the engine over another couple of times and check again until it reads the same again and again.
Anal, but gives me peace of mind.

I just keep turning the engine over until the gaps fit my feeler gauges. Saves messing around adjusting things.

Many moons ago Steptoe showed me a little trick with a screwdriver to get TDC, works every time. :thumb2

I,ve just checked my crystal ball, and it looks like some work may be coming your way Steptoe.:D
