hiya all, bin ringin round this afternoon to get prices for a 12k service on me twin cam gsa, to be fare all about the same price, but was given some conflictin info, and I dunno whether I buy it or not:confused:, one dealer told me what I expected would be done on the service schedule, air, oil, plugs.final drive, valve clearance, throttle sync. etc.etc., the other dealer sed the same all bar the valve clearance, he reckons bmw only recommend this "every other service on the twin cams, but every service on the single cam?????

this true????, I was under the impression they were checked every service???

i thought they were checked every service, but don't know. they are shimmed as opposed to screw adjusters, so maybe they can go longer without checking?

edit: just checked my service sheet and it says every 10,000Km.

The actual valves wont be significantly different on single cam (same steel alloy same length) or twin cam so its reasonable the clearance checks would be a similar frequency.

good point.

method of adjustment probably doesn't make that much difference.

Ringing around for the same 12k comparisons. Best I've had (which seems v good) is 279 inc VAT from Dick Lovett. This includes: Item 11.34 502; Checking valve clearance (for maintenance).
Mine is a Sept 12 GS12

Method of adjustment shouldn't make a difference in theory, but I find in practice it does. On a wide range of engines with both types of adjustment the shimmed valves hardly ever need adjusting but the screw adjusted ones do.

Valve checks at 12,000 miles would be usual on shimmed valves, anything more often seems like overkill. But I've only had my Beemer for a year, all this experience is from other bikes.
