Anyone tried doing their own valve clearences? Is it a Bas+%rd of a job best left to a BW techie or easy and simple?

Valve clearances

I listen to mine every day, & in 27500 miles none have needed adjustment.

:augie

It is a bastard of a job. The amount of stuff to come off is immense, this alone makes it worth doing on your own. Once the junk is out of the way it is pretty straight forward.

The first time you do it is the worst, because you don't know what size the original shims are.:blast

Fairly straight forward as I remember - there's a good step by step guide on the US 650 forum.

Tip - Put a good piece of cardboard behind the radiator to protect it before you start;)

yep did mine recently. bit of a bastid if you have to remove the hydraulic cam tensioner, which i did :blast You can get the cams out without doing that tho, just have to take them off in the correct order. Cable ties are your friend, strap the chain to the cams so you don't loose the timing, works a treat :thumb2

Al the front plastics come off (the two dakar ones and the middle section.) The airbox comes off, oil tank off, battery out, battery box off, cover over relays off, rear strap that the seat latches on to off, throttle cable off. I think that's it

It'll take you about 3/4 hour to get that far, there are a few other small bits to come off but nothing over complicated. Then it's just a matter of taking the cam cover off and measuring em, remembering to make sure the engines at tdc with the special bolt, i can lend you mine if you don't have one or they are a couple of quid from motorworks.

If you do it as part of a major service its not too much extra work as to drain the oil it's best to take the tank off, draining the coolant takes some other bits off.

good luck :D

Oh! Not much to it then

Just did the oils on sunday  Thats easy enough, even had the airbox off to change the plug.

Thanks for all your replys fellas :thumb2 looks like I'll be taking it apart again quite soon.

don't need to drain the oil out if you've already done it, just make sure you support the oil tank from above as the hoses won't support the weight. :thumb2

Sounds like you had it stripped down just far enough to do the valves then put it all back together :D
