Hi

So I am selling the bike (see items for sale/ebay) and I will also sell the vario luggage but before I do I have to extract the exisiting locks. The dealer says he will do it if I pop in but to be honest a pop into my dealer is a 2 hr round trip.

So does anyone know how you remove the locks (barrels) from the panniers, all I know is that you need the key to do it??

Andy

Leave the locks in and alone.

They will be keyed to your bike (which you are selling separately) but so what.

The buyer of your Vario panniers can get them re-keyed to suit their GS, a process that need not involve you.

The dealer said that the problem is that without the keys they have to drill the locks out and its easy with the key intact.

Hi Klunk,

I have recently bought a set of panniers off ebay and the seller had kindly removed the locks and taped them up so that the tumblers didn't fall out. This then meant that I was able to rekey the locks following the excellent thread below so they worked off my ignition key.

It should only take you about ten minutes to do both locks, and i'm sure the buyer will be grateful. My understanding is that without the key, it is a real pain to remove the locks.

If anyone else has rekeyed their locks I am looking for four No.1 tumblers to swap for my spare four no. 3 tumblers!

cheers

What a load of cobblers.

I bought some vario panniers a couple of months ago and they came unlocked (obviously as otherwise I would'n't have been able to open the case to get to the lock!) and without keys.

Getting the lock out is a simple process. All it requires is for the yellow locking tab to be removed and then a thin flat-bladed precision screwdriver to get the lock itself out. MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE THE KEY IN AS YOU EXTRACT THE LOCK OTHERWISE THE TUMBLERS WILL FALL OUT AND MAKE A MESS!

I should add that the key you use to extract the lock can be any GS key not necessarily the one that fits the lock.

Good article here http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=300753&highlight=vario about it. I used this to remove my locks and it really is very easy.

April fools day at your dealers then!

As above follow the link above from AdvRider, easy peasy job:thumb

Once you have the barrels out, before you remove your key wrap insulating tape around the barrel, that will hold the leaves in as you remove your key. Then hand the barrels to the new owner of the panniers, and its up to him to get them keyed to his bike key :thumb

I wouldn't even do that. Just leave them unlocked as the previous owner did with mine and let the next owner sort it out. Taking the locks out will only increase the risk of tumblers and springs being lost.

I do appreciate your reasoning, but having just bought a set without keys it was a bit of a pain to get the barrels out ;) I luckily found a key that just about fit , and used that to extract the barrels ....

If the OP doesn't feel that confident in removing the barrels and taping them up then either follow the links for removal or leave them in as you suggest . Rainbow yesterday

" You need the key to remove the barrels, otherwise it can't be done"

that wasn't that helpful at the time ;)

In one..... :thumb2

I sold Vario panniers to a fellow Tosser and that is exactly what I did, posting them off unlocked with no risk of the tumblers / springs etc. falling out.

He simply got the open locks re-keyed to suit him. It didn't inconvenience me nor (as far as I can tell) him.

Job done. :thumb2

Just leave the locks, unlocked, when you sell them.

The purchaser can then get the required shims to rekey them to their key.

But surely the new owner will have a key anyway? I don't understand why someone would buy varios with no key and therefore no bike to use with them?

I'll reiterate, you can use ANY GS key to remove the barrels, you don't need the original key that fits and turns the lock! You need A key, not THE key.

Remind me again why the locks need to be removed?!

Just a quick thanks to everyone on this forum. I bought an unlocked Vario topbox yesterday off johnd. Found the right thread on this forum, took the lock out, swapped a few barrel sliders around (didn't even have to buy any), and 'hey presto' topbox lock now the same as my bike and panniers.

So, to re-iterate what everyone is saying on here. Please sell the panniers with the locks in (that way nothing will get lost). It's a very simple diy job to key them to the new owners bike. I suspect the dealer is following some 'BMW company line' re drilling the locks out, thus implying that the security is better than it really is!

And, to the guy that had his topbox opened and his lid nicked, then think himself lucky that they didn't take the topbox aswell.
