My recently acquired GSA's Vario top box is not expanding correctly. The lock side expands correctly when pulling the lever over, but the hinge side expands to a point, but trys go back down!! Is this a common problem and is it fixable?
TIA

They have been known to get very stiff over time, to the point were the mechanism can break or, if you’re lucky , maybe jump a tooth on the internal plastic cogs. This would cause the front and rear to be out of synch with each other.
Was the lever on yours previously stiff to operate? If so it might have jumped without you realising.
You might be able to fix it by stripping it down ( remove the 4 screws in the bottom of the box, 2 on each side, which then allows the lid and lifty uppy bit to be removed from the base) and cleaning it all out. The issue is partly due to dirt and grit build up between the sliding parts.
You might be able to spot if the cog teeth have jumped and set them to the correct place before reassembly.

Yes fixable, but isnt a press here, push there fix

The cams for the vario mech have lost there reference timing,

Its a big strip and realign all the cams to there reference marks and rebuild. X3

Cos your always at least one tooth out when you do it lol

Its just a time cosuming operation,

I think there is a how to on you tube

Thanks for info. Just surprised as my new steed has only done 6k and supposadly never riden in the rain. Given its condition I believe it. I will wait for a day when my patience is feeling good. 😉

It certainly did. Thanks. At least I knew what to expect when Disassembling it, knowing I wasn't going to be left with a pile of misplaced cogs.
It gives you a bit of confidence doesn't it so glad you got it sorted
