My Vario top box appears to be a later model (it came secondhand with a previous GS) with two holes at the rear that mate up with two lugs on the rack, and a metal pivot that locates in a hole in the rack.

I have recently noticed that there is about 2mm side ways play where the T/B attaches to the two lugs at the rear of the rack.

Is this normal?

I will probably attach some rubber to take up this slack, but is the movement a common occurrence (they all do that, Sir!)?

Top box security

Yep you've answered your own question and mines just the same on a 2008 model and it never fell off even when overloaded but you could always put 2x bungees over n round to the t/b base plate if it worries ya,I think the movements their to make locating easier ?? :thumb2

mines the same as well, 2006 bike, i was real worried at first as i had always used givi monokey which seems so solid and secure compared to the bmw stuff, but the bmw top box has never let me down, fully loaded with the wife using it as a backrest no dramas...yet

Mines the same, I asked at BMW dealer the other week (I've only had my 09 GS for a few weeks) ..."They all do that sir"

I might try a bit of gripper mat, tha worked well on the gobi top box I had on my KTM adventure.

Have tried a few GS's with Vario top boxes - they all have some play. Some more than others - but nothing to worry about, unless this seems quite excessive. Just make sure you have it on properly and nice ans secure.

Many thanks, lads, for all your replies.

I just didn't want to run the risk of seeing my top box overtaking me on the autobahn in a couple of weeks time.
