Hi

I have a new to me 2005 GS 1200 with Vario luggage. The topbox has a hairline crack starting in what I've learnt from this website is usual place. Does anyone have any experiences with how BMW might deal with this? The luggage was bought with the bike when it was first ordered - does this mean it covered by the 2-year warranty?

Will BMW care that I am not the first owner?

Will BMW say "it's just a crack, don't worry until it gets worse". I hope not as if it gets worse by flying down the road after the warranty has expired, I'll be none too chuffed!

cheers

Provided that a) the bike is still within warranty and b) you have a receipt to show that the luggage was supplied with the bike (i.e. isn't beyond two-years old), the dealer will replace the top-box lower shell. Common problem with all of the earlier boxes (like mine!)

i took mine in last month and they replaced it no bother once i showed them the receipt for the topbox :D

Had two replaced.:(
First one became loose on the base plate replaced in warranty.
Second one crack in the usual place replaced 9 months out of warranty :spitfire

Third one sold the bugger and bought a new Givi V46.:thumb and had £100 in me pocket.:augie:thumb

Keep in mind: Even if they do replace it, it will hapen again.......

I reinforced mine with a metal strip and some 2 component glue to prevent it from getting loose. If it holds in the next 2 (Norwegian) weeks, that's the cure.

top box

mine was replaced under warranty,no problem, new design is much better and reinforced around locking bar

I've had two replaced. The most recent is of a different design and looks like it should have addressed the problem.

Speak nicely to your dealer and I am sure you'll be fine.

I reinforced mine with a metal strip and 10000km later no problems. It developed the hairline crack before I reinforced that area - couldn't be bother trying to get a replacment if its going to do the same thing again.
Its only a top box.

Had two replaced under warranty then gave up and got a full refund.

They didn't just crack mind - they flew off messing up my dinner.

:confused:Where exactly is the usual place that they crack? Also how visible is the crack?

If you crouch at the back of the bike and look up to where the box locks onto the carrier you will see where they crack. There are photos on an earlier thread showing old and new mounts. The new mount looks a little stronger.

Cheers bear:bow:clap:thumb

Hi

Thanks for the responses.

Took bike to SPC today, they fixed it no problem. Replaced mount plate and entire box. New design has a different design. It has a metal plate moulded in the plastic across the normal crack location and also has a post on the bottom of the box that engages in a recess in the new mount plate. Seems much more sturdy.
