Hi all, anybody else had problem with their streetpilot III after updating to ver.2.5? since updating mine has been freezing up and having trouble recalculating.

Mine turned itself off a couple of times but hasn't repeated that for a while.

But all my instinct tells me that v2.5 has got several problems. It doesn't seem to work as well as earlier versions.

Tested mine yesterday after master reset and reloading 2.5 but still freezes if recalculating off-route,not all the time though, strange thing is after it freezes if you turn it off and back on it works fine and it has recalculated and it stills knows where exactly you are,so leads me to think the screen freezes but the unit is still working in background if you know what i mean.
Those with ver 2.5 are you using mapsource 4 or 5?

ah well after discussion with my dealer and him with garmin,my unit has been sent for repair, apparently its a unit fault and not software related.:(

Just an up date, recieved new spIII underwarantee but guess what, this is just the same.Did discover screen only froze when 'prompted' recalc was selected and ok when on auto. This i guess is a unit 'bug' seing as this unit is exactly the same with new software also loaded.

Now hang on!

When you say "freezing", do you mean that evrything stops moving WHILST it recalculates?
If so, that is quite normal for the SP3. Well, at least mine does it too.
I turned the recalc function off for that reason. I just find my own way back to the route.

Guys, for what it's worth, a new recalculation algorithm was implemented with the SP III software version 2.50, and if you are not fully familiar with the change made, the behaviour of the GPSR may appear to be inconsistent.

Here's the background:

Prior to version 2.50, whenever you got off-route, if the GPSR was set to do automatic route recalculation, it would recalculate the entire route from your present position to your destination. In other words, if you had a route active from Paris to Dakar, and you made one little wrong turn in downtown Paris, the GPSR would recalculate the whole darn route, all the way to Dakar.

With effect from software version 2.50, the GPSR will make three "quick recalculations" that simply attempt to get you back onto the existing route. If, after the three quick recalculations have been made, you have still not established yourself back on the original calculated route, the GPSR will do a full recalculation from your present position to your destination (in other words, what it used to do all the time with the previous software versions).

The "quick recalculation" feature was implemented to reduce the time that was needed to complete a recalculation when the user strayed slightly off of the established route, perhaps due to traffic congestion, missing a turn, or maybe because they popped into a gas station for a fill-up or similar. It works quite well, but can appear confusing to riders who are long familiar with the full recalculation algorithm.

With version 2.50, you can force a full recalculation at any time by selecting 'recalculate' from the menu, if you actually want a full recalculation to be done and don't want to wait for the 3 quick iterations to happen first.

screen freezing

No thats not what i meant, when using prompted recalculation sometimes the screen will freeze and STAY FREEZED until i turn off and back on again,But when it comes back on the screen that apears has the updated route with the corection position on map. This to me means that although the screen freezes the unit is still working and has recalculated route but you cant hear or see that it has done so.The unit Garmin has given me know is brand new and new software loaded from the disc that has been sent with new unit but still freezes.
This isnt a huge problem as it doesnt freeze all the time and not using the routing facility on a daily basis its hapens now and again, but it definately not right.

Have you tried resetting the unit ?? This should only be done if you have unsolvable problems, which sounds like you have.
It worked for mine, I had the same problem when I got mine.

Lyndon:

Hmmm, that's not good, the unit freezing up, I mean. I have occasionally had freezes when working with beta software, but never with production (public release) software.

I havn't much experience with 2.50, because by the time it was released, I was already using the SP 2650. But, the SP III software prior to that release was very stable, and as far as I know, the only significant changes in 2.50 were the inclusion of the "partial recalculation" feature.

Here's what I would do if I were you:

1) Do a factory reset.

2) Download 2.50 once again from the Garmin website, and re-load it into your SP III.

3) Create a new mapset on your data chip (re-load your data chip).

If there are any "bugs" that are specific to your individual unit, that should be enough to wipe them out. I would not suggest doing all three items at once - do one, then use the unit for an hour or two, then do the next step, then use the unit for an hour or two, then do the third step.

Like I said way back when I started to post here, I don't work for or speak for Garmin, so what I have written above is just my own take on how to troubleshoot it before you escalate the problem to Garmin.

Thanks Pan,
ive tried all the above on both my original unit and the new replacement with no luck. What i havnt tried is using mapsource 5.4 but according to garmin its a fault within the unit not for it to switch back to routing screen after recalculation, strange thing is it only freezes on prompted recalc not auto recalc.
I'm off to Alexandra Palace tommorrow so we'll see how it performs.

Don't know if the SP III also works with loose batteries? My GPS V would freeze like you explained if I left the batteries in the unit while it was plugged into the bike's power source.
Took the batteries out and problem solved.
