So I was thinking – these Jesse Odysseys are OK (they are). Panniers aren’t rocket science – they’re just metal boxes to take your kit around on your bike, after all.

A slight problem came up when I was travelling to & from Gibraltar last summer. Heat. I’d ordered the Odysseys in black to make it easier to touch up the paintwork after getting minor dings etc. The trouble is that, in strong sunlight, anything inside black panniers cooks. Bottles water was hot after an hour. Since a lot of my planned trip was going to be in high temperatures, I considered stripping the Odysseys down and having them re-painted in silver or white. Then it occurred to me that I could probably sell the Odysseys for the same price as a new pair of Vern’s Worldbeaters.

Having sold the Odysseys late last week (thanks Johnathan, you got a bargain :thumb), I now have a fully custom-made set of silver anodised Worldbeaters on the Adv.

Security? No snags - at Vern's suggestion I boght a pair of good quality (keyed-alike) padlocks, covered the lock bodies in wooly velcro, put another piece of hooked velcro under the latch and now have locks that don't rattle :thumb

Dealing with the manufacturer direct (over a cup of tea :D) allows you to explore various options to customise the panniers to your individual needs. Vern designed & fitted a 'holster' for my laptop on the 'wheel' side of the RH pannier.

It's designed to fit the padded case of my laptop exactly, the case is held in place by velcro straps.

On the 23rd December, I rode the Adv round to my friend Anni's place. She makes her living by custom making top quality canopies and soft tops for boats and cars. In a rash moment (probably not entirely unconnected with my giving her an IAM pass certificate;)), Anni had offered to make me some bags to fit Verns panniers. Despite the time of year, Anni came up trumps and delivered the bags on 2nd January - Top girl (rides a VFR - maybe she'll be attracted to the dark side one day ;)). Each pannier gets 2 bags,

one of which fits in the lid, the other in the main body of the pannier. The photos don't reflect the workmanship (should that be workwomanship  ) and quality of the bags. They are made from the sort of material you find on Merc & BMW hoods and are double skinned (Anni's brief was that I wannted to be able to put the bags down in a puddle, if necessary, without the contents getting wet). These are serious bits of kit and I doubt that you'll find better anywhere.

Each main bag has a larger than A4 document pocket

and a zip which runs around 3 sides, for maximum access. These bags have a blue lining because it looks cool and also because Anni ran out of black material:D

The top bags fit, unsurprisingly, in the pannier lids,

where they are held in place by large spring clips, fabricated by Vern.

And this is what it all looks like loaded.

I'd like to thank Vern and Anni for their help and work - both far in excess of the call of duty. I know as I pack my bike off tomorrow, it's equipped with the best luggage available.

Vern's workmanship has been praised on this site for some time, but his dedication to getting the job done is something that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. He worked for 8 hours straight fitting the panniers (and rewiring my mini-indicators with WideTails*) - overcoming snags as he came across them and never ONCE paused in continuously taking the piss out of me :D - a true craftsman at work.

Anni says she'd be willing to make more pannier liners if anyone's interested. They aren't cheap - but I consider them excellent value at £195ish for the 4. Like Vern, Anni can alter the design colour, size etc etc to suit your exact needs. I'll post Anni's Email address (she lives in Cromer, Norfolk) in 'Innovators & Vendors' next week after the bike packing madness has finished.....

Mike:)

*Ask Vern to put some WideTails in your indicators. Go on - he won't mind. Oh, if you do ask him, please video the result.... :yelrotflm

Nice pieces of kit

Mike, Nice pieces of kit, it never ceases to amaze me the talent people on this site have and people they know.

PS when's the big moment.
