My wife is an experienced rider with over 25 years, Gravel, dirt, pot holes etc never seem to upset her riding style or cause a problem. Now for the first time she has all the safety features, ABS Traction control etc etc .
It was therefore a bit of a shock to see her skidding sideways down the road. After calming down we looked the problem bit of road, there was a band of gravel across the road followed by fine dust.
This is the chain of events we think caused the near miss.
She rode over this gravel just has she had been doing so for years without any problem but this time the traction control detected wheel spin, dropped the power until she was off the gravel, dropped it more on the dust until the tyre gripped good road. By this time the engine speed was too low to pick up and the bike stalled at about 20 mph locking the back wheel.
We could be wrong with our conclusion, and a quick dab of the clutch would have prevented the stall.

Any body had a similar problem?

I had a brown trouser moment in Cornwall this weekend, when I hit some loose gravel whilst on full lean on a fast bend. And another while accelerating in Exmoor on Friday, in the rain when the bike stepped out on a shiny bit of road.

I suppose that's what Rain mode is for, but Dynamic is more fun!:green gri:P

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think TC cuts power enough to drop revs, but that depends how it works.

An example of why TC is not much of a rider aid and benefit, in posts 1 and 2

I hated it when I had it on a GSA, glad all my bikes are devoid of it now:thumby:

Your throttle and gears are all you need for decent traction control and it has always been thus

It does seem strange that the TC allowed the engine to drop power/revs so much that it then stalled. I'm no expert, just another tw@t with an opinion but that just doesn't seem right?

You do realise that this is now going to turn into a classic ukGSer thread about the merits of TC with the old duffers in one corner, the uninformed in another and .................. well you get the picture, so, to kick it off, I LOVE TC :) My 1190 is the first bike I've ever owned with it and it's switchable for sensitivity OR off. It's also lean sensitive and from everything I've read about it far more subtle (as in you don't feel it kicking in) and usable than other systems out there (including WMB).

I've yet to knowingly have it kick in when riding normally but, especially off road, I can wack open the throttle, step the back out and let the electronics take care of the rest. The first times were a bit hairy but once you learn to trust it it's such FUN! So, sod the safety aspects of it, it's there to be abused :D

PS I do know though, that one day it's gonna bite me on the arse......................

As I was reading your post I was itching to reply ... but I got to your bottom line and now have no need to :D

As a follow up to this, everyone I've spoken to (at BMW and electronics blokes in the BSB paddock) say TC won't drop the revs and slow you, it only serves to arrest acceleration. Whether something else is to blame, or there was a fault who knows?
