My BMW service agent says its normal, and nothing to worry about....as usual...but my 2006 GS exhibits a sewing maching smoothness up to an indicated 4200 rpm (all gears), then mutates into a vibrous animal (although not that excessive) until an indicated 4500 rpm is reached, upon which she smoothes out again all the way to 7.5k - how normal is this? Hamonics from the balancer or fuelling...or both. Any takers???? to assist with this one..

I have similar experience to yours regarding the patch of vibration - I suspect they all do that, just like your dealer says

smooth as a very smooth thing up to about 75mph, then it starts to vibrate a bit.

as previous poster says, handy for legal cruising :)

Yes mine's the same. The design makes the bike a bit of a vibey clunker.:) Infact Fred Dibnah would have been at home on the GS:D
That said it's the best "all rounder" on the market :rob and I think it's a great bike:thumb2 .

smoooth

I've come the the GS (6 weeks old and 2650km) off a R1200C and a Hog. So mine feels like a babies bum throughout the rev, range. So I guess its all relative.

The Hog vibrated at anything above 55mph (built for US only...) and the 1200C was ok to 60mph (also for US I suspect) but above that was very bad.

so for me GS is just great.

still loving every moment - would not change for any other...

Reassuring to see the same “rotational character” from many fellow GSer’s - no responses to the contrary? Any idea where this in-balance comes from….my dealer is barfing bubbles and can offer no real explanation for this…..but then I suppose you cannot expect everything from them..

I complained to my Main Stealer about the vibes on my 1200. I complained that someone is bolting on extra cylinders while I'm not looking, because the more miles I'm riding (1k and counting) the smooooooother its getting. :clap

Don't forget, its a 1200cc TWIN - its bound to vibrate!!

As TB once said 10 years ago - 'Things can only get better!!'

I agree with all the above posts too. I didn't notice it on my test ride when it had done 900 miles, but was quite worried about it on the motorway journey home, thinking something was wrong.

After 11k miles it is definitely smoother, but still there.

Still love it though :D

GS Tennis - a new SPORT???....not heard off it yet in South Africa, but I have suffered from Tennis elbow before-not nice....good to know some benefit from inherent twin vibration, yet another compelling reason to ride a GS...and more often. I suppose riding a Harley would then be good for????? No takers on the reason for the vibration - I am leaning towards a higher order harmonic that does not meet up with another oposite vibe from the crankshaft that it can balance...and this is were my physics come to an abrubt end...any help?
