Vibration felt in rear wheel when leaning over

Hi guys, first of all Merry Christmas :)

As it is Christmas Day I won't anticipate replies very quickly but could do with a little friendly advice if you could help.

I was out on my pride and joy (1150GS Adv) today and the weight got the better of me on a little loose gravel and I let it it drop very slowly on the right hand side. :( The bike is new to me and so is offroading hence the need for help. Im glad to say the drop was very gentle.

I still have road/offroad tyres (not ideal as it turned out) so once I was uprighted and set to try and climb up and out of where I was the tyre was flicking up a fair amount of gravel.

I managed to escape and the bike looks absolutely fine, no visible damage anywhere but once back on the tarmac, I noticed when leaning the bike to turn there is a rubbing kinda vibration type of sensation that feels like its coming from the back end. It happens on both sides. I had to ride about 15k's home after which it seemed a little less. Could this be like a piece of gravel stuck somewhere I should check? or something more sinister

Any ideas, suggestions please. I am in Spain on holiday so going into a bike workshop isn't going to be the most straight forward. If you can suggest any minor checking I can do please fire away. Im fairly handy with tools and have access to plenty.

possible

causes are the paralever bearings worn/in need of adjustment or the final drive bearing failing. Both of these are fairly common & could replicate your symptoms. With the bike on its centre stand and the rear wheel off the deck try holding the rear wheel at first 9 & 3 o'clock and see if there is free-play as you push/pull the wheel then try the same at 12 & 6 o'clock. If you notice any freeplay while doing this try to get someone to hold the rear brake down and do the same again checking if the play is reduced/stopped. Try looking here for a bit of advise re the final drive.

Possibility

Hi, I have an 1150GS that has Tourance tyres. I get the same sensation and I've always put it down to tyres as there is no play in the rear end at all.

Another vote for Tourances, particularly once part worn, causing a buzzing sensation when leaned over. Are you sure the sensation was new, or were you just hyper-sensitive after your experience? Slow, gentle tipovers haven't ever caused me any problems with the bike...
 
+1 for the Tourances. When I took my BT020/021 shod, 17" alloys off and put the spoked and Tourance'd wheels on it felt like all the bearings within 3 feet of anything vaguely rotatey were fecked :rolleyes:

I'd put it down to Tourances too, noticed this on my 1100, changed to Trail Attacks and it disappeared!:thumb
 
Make sure your rear wheel, has not come a bit loose the tightning touque is
quite high initially 50 ft lbs final tight 70ft pounds (look in the book). Mine has come loose a few times in the pasr cos of not tightening it enough.

Will also have a play with the wheel for bearing issue.

Tyres and play

Hi guys,

I have checked the wheel at the 12-6 and 9-3 o'clock positions with brake on and off. There does appear to be a very small amount of play felt mostly in the 9-3 o'clock positions, with brake on and off. Should there be a very small amount or none at all? What would you suggest

The tyres im using are the Continental Attack, are these noted for this vibration too?

The journey to my current location amounted to just under 1000 miles. (made on both motorway and B roads) and after looking closely I can see quite a flat area across the centre of the tyre as well as the tread features. On the way to the offroad spot I leant the bike over several times but the vibration sensation wasn't there, it was however on the return.

sounds like

the paralever bearings need a bit of adjusting or replacing. This could account for your symptoms but if it's only very small play there may be other factors, i.e. tyres etc. There are a lot of posts on here do a search for more info but here's your starter for ten.

Tyres for GS's are foten quite "blocky" and often wear unevenly. They are often noisy when leant over especially when worn. The pivot bearings will not give you and vibration feeling or noise but will feel notchy when they move up and down.

A way of checking this is to remove the rear wheel and the parrallel bar at the bottom of the drive and then move the bevel box through its arc feeling for notchyness. If it's there then that will be why their is play. They are not very expensive and not too difficult to change.

If the vibration is down to the drive itself then it will be the crown bearing which is more of a PIA but less common. The tyres reason is the main culprit for the noise and you may have found notchy pivot bearings as a seperate issue.

If this is your 1st BM then there may be a few other noises that are part of the "character" as well...:augie

PS Conti tyres also get noisy...

Thanks for your help there.

I ended up taking the rear wheel off, giving the surfaces a check and clean, and removed any grit around including a larger piece of stone that came from somewhere there. After reassembling it all I went for a spin and it had gone!!! surprisingly.

Will bear you comments in mind as I continue to ride.

Training regieme for thwe kent piss up and Dragon rally, last kent rally went to bed at 2.55am not good enough so got 6o improve.
