VIN code - serial number

In order to check the model year of your bike look at the serial number then count back 8 digits from the end of this serial number (also called VIN).
It is the 8th digit from the right that tells the model year, period.
If the 8th digit back is a 5, the year model is 2005, regardless of the production date.

May i suggest a somewhat easier method to identify an 05 build model

Lift riders seat, note presence of toolkit.
Remove toolkit and unfold
notice dire absence of tools in afforementioned toolkit
notice empty space where puncture kit should be
refitting is reversal of removal

Yep, mine to. Having said that the tool kit wasn't on the bike when I collected it from SPC, they had to search round in the stores for it, so I reckon I may have just been lucky

Just tried that and it shows my 05 1200GS as a 650/GS production 2004????

No thats mine that is

So thats a piece of cack then!

Using empirical methods such a missing useful bits, the 8th digit method and removing bits of plastic my 05 was imported sometime after Oct 04.
