VIN Reading: question from American

If you look at the R1100 series page on that website, you'll see some 95 7 digit numbers.

Is yours listed there?

I'm buying a 1995 1100GS from a guy, and he gave me the VIN as it is written on the title: 7 digits.

I'm from the US, so I'm used to 17 digits. This website: http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/enginechassis.htm says the 7 digit system went away in the 80s, so I'm confused. The VIN for that bike *should* be 17 digits, right?

The last 7 digits is the recognised way of Identifying the bike for MOT and for Parts at dealers and on line

And you get all part number for your bike there too

I like some aspects of the UK registration system, especially how plates stay with the bike. In the states, you take the plates off and put different ones on. But then, I hate how gigantic UK plates are.

Admittedly, that link doesn't provide much beyond color and production date. Came across it a few weeks ago when I was debating how much to pay for the bike. I'm sure I overpaid, but so far it's a great ride.
